Lyrics that impress you everytime you hear them?

Mike & the Mechanics - The Living Years:
I wasnt there that morning, when my father passed away
I didnt get to tell him, all the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit, later that same year
Im sure I heard his echo in my babys new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

Possibly a bit cheesy, but brings a lump to my throat as it just strikes a chord with me.

HipHop means nothing to me. I just can't relate to it. All seems to be about poseurs pretending to be hard and bragging about their ho's and bling. I'll stick to my indie. More inventive and interesting.

Is it cruel or kind not to speak my mind,
and to lie to you rather than hurt you?
Well I'll confess all of of my sins
after several large gins
but still I'll hide from you,
hide what's inside from you.
And alarm bells ring
when you say your heart still sings
when you're with me.
Won't you please forgive me?
But I no longer hear the music

I write this alone on my bed
I've poisoned every room in the house
The place is quiet and so alone
Pretend there's something worth waiting for
There's nothing nice in my head
The adult world took it all away
Wake up with same spit in my mouth
Cannot tell if it is real or not
I try and walk in a straight line
An imitation of dignity

Last night these two bouncers
And one of em's alright
The other one's the scary one
His way or no way, totalatarian

He's got no time for you
Looking or breathing
How he don't want you to

So step out the queue
He makes examples of you
And there's nowt you can say
Behind they go through to the bit where you pay
And you realise then that it's finally the time
To walk back past ten thousand eyes in the line

And you can swap jumpers and make another move
Instilled in your brain you've got something to prove
To all the smirking faces and the boys in black
Why can't they be pleasant?
Why can't they have a laugh?

He's got his hand in your chest
He wants to give you a duff
Well secretly I think they want it all to kick off
They want, arms flying everywhere and
Bottles as well it's just
Something to talk about
A story to tell yea

And a bit of classic rock to finish it off.

Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait, all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relay, the story was quite clear

Pearl Jam - Black

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, can't it be mine."

Those lyrics cut me up every time I hear them, its the emotion in his voice.

Belle and Sebastian

[The Boy with the Arab Strap.]

What did you learn from your time in the solitary
Cell of your mind?
There was noise and distractions from anything good
And the old prison food
Colour my life with the chaos of trouble
Cause anything’s better than posh isolation
1 missed the bus
And you were laid on your back
With the boy with the Arab strap
With the boy with the Arab strap.

[I’m done with Drugs.]

I'm done with drugs and cigarettes
pornography and casual sex
I'm done with drink and late night fun
my hedonism's all been done

Because I have finally found you
and I want to build my world around you

I'm done with noise and all it brings.
Sonic Youth, The Rites of Spring.
I'll mend my ways I'll cut my hair
I'll even change the clothes I wear

Because I have finally found you
and I want to build my world around you

Feels like something's got to change
please don't let me turn out strange
Feels like something's got to change
please don't let me down

Because I have finally found you
and I want to build my world around you
Because I have finally found you
and I want to build my world around you

[Son Of A Gun.]

Up up up and down
Turn turn turnaround
Round round roundabout
And over again
Gun gun son of a gun
You are the only one
Makes any difference what I say

The sun shines in the bedroom
When we play
The raining always starts
When you go away

Up up up and down
Turn turn turnaround
Round round roundabout
And over again
Gun gun son of a gun
You are the only one
Makes any difference what I say

The sun shines in the bedroom
When we play

I cant believe no one mentioned Mr Brightside.

Most people must have been in this situation:

Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
Now my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress, now
Let me go

'Cause I just can't look
It's killing me
And taking control

dont get me wrong i really do love the killers

but this is one of the most lazy rhymes ive ever heard in any song. so so pointless.

Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag

gotta gotta be down because i want it all - very good
he takes off her dress now, let me go is a good lyric. and the chorus is good.

i havent heard a better song lyric that describes the anguish of imagining what an unrequited love is doing after seeing her (in this case) go off with someone else for the night.

for me it's not about the rhyme, its about the progression in this guys imagination about what is happening and how he is powerless to stop it. it leaps from image to image as the imagination takes this guy to more and more painful places. the rhyme and words are short and insistent andinrefutable. there is no ambiguity in his description of what is going through his mind and the rhythm helps us understand that he cant escape from this spiral.

it's such an emotional song and the simple rhyme and rhythm capture the acute simplicity of the pain: guy loves girl, girl doesnt love guy, girl goes off with another guy for the night, first guy is left with his imagination and the pain it evokes.

Another:

If you're in Heaven then you'll forgive me, dear
Because that's what they do up there
If you're in Hell, then what can I say
You probably deserved it anyway
I guess I'm gonna find out any day
For we'll meet again
And there'll be Hell to pay

Deep.

So, so, so many songs have lyrics which grab you. For now, I'll add these:

Biffy Clyro - Mountains

I just adore this song.

Took a bite out of a mountain range,
Thought my teeth would break; the mountain did.
Lets go, I want to go all the way to the horizon.

I took a drink out of the ocean and,
I'm treading water there before I drown.
Lets dive, I want to dive to the bottom of the ocean.
I took a ride, I took a ride, I wouldn't go there without you.
Lets take a ride, we'll take a ride. I wouldn't leave here without you.

I am a mountain, I am the sea, you can't take that away from me.
I am a mountain, I am the sea, you can't take that away from me.

'Cause you tear us apart, with all the things you don't like.
You can't understand that I won't leave 'til we're finished here, and then you'll find out where it all went wrong.

I wrote a note to the jungle and it wrote me back that I was never crowned king of the jungle, so there's and end to my horizon.
I took a ride, I took a ride. I wouldn't go there without you.
Lets take a ride, we'll take a ride. I wouldn't leave here without you.

I am a mountain, I am the sea, you can't take that away from me.
I am a mountain, I am the sea.

'Cause you tear us apart, with all the things you don't like.
You can't understand that I won't leave 'til we're finished here, and then you'll find out where it all went wrong.

Nothing lasts forever, except you and me (You are my mountain, you are my sea).
Love will last forever, between you and me (You are my mountain, you are my sea).

I am a mountain, I am the sea. You can't take that away from me.
I am a mountain, I am the sea.
I am a mountain, I am the sea

Colin Hay - Beautiful World

Self-explanatory really.

My my my it's a beautiful world
I like swimmin' in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free, or a woman if you are one
I like swimmin' in the sea

My my my it's a beautiful world
I like drinkin' Irish tea
With a little bit of Lapsang Souchong
I like makin' my own tea

My my my it's a beautiful world
I like drivin' in my car
I roll the top down, sometimes I travel quite far
Drive to the ocean, stare up at the stars
I like drivin' in my car

All around is anger
Automatic guns
There's death in large numbers
No respect for women or our little ones
I tried talking to Jesus
But he just put me on hold
Said he'd been swamped by calls this week
And he could not shake his cold

And still this emptiness persists
Perhaps this is as good as it gets
When you've given up the drink and those nasty cigarettes
Now I leave the party early, at least with no regrets
I watch the sun as it comes up, I watch it as it sets
Yeah this is as good as it gets

Well my my my it's a beautiful world
I like sleepin' with Marie
She is one sexy girl full of mystery
She says she doesn't love me but she likes my company
For now that's good enough for me

Well my my my it's a beautiful world
I like swimmin' in the sea
I like to go out beyond the white breakers
Where a man can still be free, or a woman if you are one
I like swimmin' in the sea.

Colin Hay - Waiting For My Real Life To Begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down, on me

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in
But don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, soon
It's just that times are lean

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
Don't you understand
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin.

The Album Leaf - Always For You

Simply a stunningly beautiful song in every sense. It never fails to calm me.

In the air I flew
Through the clouds I fall
Through the country I've walked
In front of temples I've stood
Before the ocean I pray
And I said your name

In the air I flew
Through the clouds I fall
And all the things I've tried to say
Were never easy to explain
They were always meant for you

And all the memories that were made
For years and years
I've chased this day
They were always for you
Always for you

In the air I breath
Through the clouds I see
Through the cities I've walk
In the castles I dreamed
On the mountain I climb
When I call your name

In the air I flew
Through the clouds I've fell
And all the things I've tried to change
Were never easy to contain
They were always meant for you
(always for you)

And all the memories will never fade
For years and years
In my heart you'll stay
It was always for you
Always for you
Always for you

And all the pieces that remain
They will build a place for us to stay
They were always meant for you
(always for you)

And all the chances that we take
For years and years
We'll have this place
They were always for you
Always for you

anything from phil colins

She calls out to the man on the street
sir, can you help me?
Its cold and Ive nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?

He walks on, doesnt look back
He pretends he cant hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh think twice, its another day for
You and me in paradise
Oh think twice, its just another day for you,
You and me in paradise

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see shes been crying
Shes got blisters on the soles of her feet
Cant walk but shes trying

Oh think twice...

Oh lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that shes been there
Probably been moved on from every place
cos she didnt fit in there

Oh think twice...

Supporting Caste said:
When the credits finally roll for this, the worst story ever told, don’t bother sifting through the names for yours or anyone you know. Unless they were by chance a shepherd king, a virgin birth, a resurrection, a messianic prince or some such childish thing. You can storm the edit suite or move to block its theatrical release, but I think we can safely guarantee that there will be no revisions to the script made on behalf of a supporting cast(e). Because history exalts only the pornography of force-that of murderers and psychopaths (the rest of us, of course, stricken from the narrative wholesale: a back drop to the tale)-as we, the two-bits, are ushered on and swiftly off this stage with the jawbones of asses. No stirring curtain call for the masses. No floral bouquet. No breaking of legs. No recurring role. No artistic control. And so in these days, in this terminal phase, it’s all left to chance. A piece of advice: if you’re cast on thin ice, you may as well dance. Do what you feel you must, but as for me I was not put upon this earth to subjugate or serve.

Potemkin City Limits said:
Francis didn’t give a **** about the rollbacks, the overproduction, the reduced demand. He never gave much thought to disputed contracts. In his short life he’d only ever known panic, fear, pain, darkness and pandemonium (in the hell that was his home). Fourth quarter earning expectations expedited his demise. The panic grew as the humans stalked among them. When the screaming began, Francis shut his eyes and felt the hand of inhumanity brush over him. But his would-be killer’s back turned for a moment and a blinding ray of light spread across the floor. In a crimson pool he saw his own reflection as he bolted for the door. Not just some fractured fairy-tale although I wish that that were true. This is a fable far too real. Yet we somehow still cling to the story lines that bridge the chasm between cognition and belief. Any old implausible denial that might offer some relief from the dissonance that Francis left screaming in his wake as deep into the heart of the city’s park lands he made good his escape. And where for 5 months he ran free and replayed his only fond memory-just a warm and distant dream of his mother’s loving eyes upon him. Francis made it farther than she did-a quarter mile just short of the city limits they finally captured him. There’s a statue that the abattoir erected to remind us all of their contributions. To me it marks Potemkin City Limits, this Francis cast in bronze. Not just some fractured fairy-tale, although I wish that that were true. This is a fable far too real, yet we somehow still cling to…

All about a pig escaping an abattoir, not what I was expecting.

Boys Like Girls - Broken Man

I wanna run, but only far enough to make you miss me

love that line

and 3 Doors Down - Away From the Sun

It's down to this
I've got to make this life make sense
Can anyone tell what I've done
I miss the life
I miss the colours of the world
Can anyone tell where I am

'Cause now again I've found myself
So far down, away from the sun
That shines into the darkest place
I'm so far down, away from the sun again
Away from the sun again

I'm over this
I'm tired of living in the dark
Can anyone see me down here
The feeling's gone
There's nothing left to lift me up
Back into the world I know

And now again I've found myself
So far down, away from the sun
That shines into the darkest place
I'm so far down, away from the sun
That shines to light the way for me
To find my way back into the arms
That care about the ones like me
I'm so far down, away from the sun again

It's down to this
I've got to make this life make sense
And now I can't tell what I've done

And now again I've found myself
So far down, away from the sun
That shines to light the way for me

'Cause now again I've found myself
So far down, away from the sun
That shines into the darkest place
I'm so far down, away from the sun
That shines to light the way for me
To find my way back into the arms
That care about the ones like me
I'm so far down, away from the sun again

video for this is amazing as well.

Pretty much anything that Cedric Bixler-Zavala has sung!

A few lines off the top of my head (Mars Volta and At The Drive-In):

"A capillary hint of red"

"Have you, ever tasted skin?"

"Lazarus threw the party, Lazarus threw the fight"

"Dancing on the corpses ashes"

Then my favourite song of all time pretty much:

"Just as he hit the ground They lowered a tow that Stuck in his neck to the gills Fragments of sobriquets Riddle me this Three half eaten cornias Who hit the aureole Stalk the ground Stalk the ground

You should have seen The curse that flew right by you. Page of concrete Stained walks crutch in hobbled sway Autodafe A capulary hint of red Only this manupod crescent in shape has escaped.

The house half the way Fell empty with teeth that Split both his lips, mark these words One day this chalk outline Will circle this city Was he robbed of the asphalt That cushioned his face? A room colored charlatan Hid in a safe Stalk the ground Stalk the ground

You should have seen The curse that flew right by you Page of concrete Stain walks crutch in hobbled sway Autodafe A capulary hint of red Only this manupod crescent in shape has escaped

Pull the pins Save your grace Mark these words On his grave Pull the pins Save your grace Mark these words On his grave

You should have seen The curse that flew right by you Page of concrete Stain walks crutch in hobbled sway Autodafe A capulary hint of red Everyone knows the last toes are always the coldest to go"
