Hi all,

I'm new to photography but have been interested in it for a while now. I've finally invested in a Canon E0S 450D but would like now to purchase a good quality (but not hugely expensive!) tripod. Does anyone have any recommendations or tips on what would be a 'good buy'?

Thanks in anticipation :)

Manfrotto make the best tripods. Depending on how much you want to spend you can get different sizes/types/weights. What is your budget/what are you using it for?

For casual/portable use I recently got myself a gorillapod slr zoom, handy little thing.

As above, depends what you're gonna be using it for and how many beans you have.

Manfrotto are good prosumer tripods, but Gitzo are the ultimate quality in tripods. I have used one, but could never afford one. Instead I have a Manfrotto 190xprob which does the job.

Be sure to take a look on ebay as I recently won a mint condition (practically new) Manfrotto 190CL with a #222 Joystick head for £43! The head alone is worth more than that! :)

...always worth a look I say :)

Thanks very much for your replies everyone, they are much appreciated :)

I'm looking to spend about £80 tops as i think it is possible to get a good quality tripod for that amount of money. I'd like to take it out and about a bit to get good quality pictures of a variety of subjects so ideally i'd like something which is quite lightweight to carry around, easy to use and won't blow over at the slightest hint of wind!!

I have already had a little look on ebay and have thought this might be the best way to go so all of your advice regarding what brand of tripod is best is extremely helpful as i really know nothing about them! Its also great to know that second hand good quality tripods have been picked up on ebay for a good price.

When buying your tripod you might also want to consider what type of leg locking system you might prefer too, i.e twist or flip lock.

Personally I prefer flip lever locks as I just find them less annoying and much quicker to use than twist locks.

...it's definitely worth thinking about before buying!

check out amazon for tripods mate !! loads of reviews from people who have bought them. i got a great one off there for £25 made up with it!!

Thanks for the info Neil777 :) great stuff. I have done a little more research (thanks to being pointed in the right direction here :)) and have found that the 'flip lever' lock tripods do appear to be preferred to the 'twist lock' tripods. As a reasonably clumsy person (!) should i be concentrating on the 'flip lever' lock tripods - or has anyone purchased an easy to use 'twist lock' tripod?

I've received some great advice so far everyone, thanks so much :)

To be honest it doesn't make all that much difference. It's just a matter of preference.

I have a Redsnapper – which has twist-lock legs – and I love it to bits, despite preferring snap-lock legs.
