Hello,

I am looking at buying a iPod for use in my car only.

Hopefully this week will be buying the adapter for my Fiat Punto stereo system, to allow a iPod to connect and work.

I dont want to spend much on the iPod and dont care if its alittle scratched its just gonna live in my car.

I have 9Gb of music so far, so looking for a iPod with at least 16Gb of space :)

Just alittle unsure which one to go for ?? theres that many different ones

Also with it going in my car, i wanna make sure it will be ok playing while bumping along the road not skipping and jumping during songs.

Looking at second hand i guess, cheapest option.

Which one should i be looking at ? whats all the 3rd/4th gen about ?

Thanks Ben

Personally I'd go for an iPod Touch if you're going to have it in your car all of the time.

Quick and easy to navigate with the touch screen and there's the option of directions/gps etc that you wouldn't get with other iPods.

A little more expensive than the standard iPods you see however it's worth the cost :)

If it's purely for the car, go with the cheapest one that fits the criteria.

In that case, you'll be looking at a flash-memory player, so that rules out the iPod Classic.

Each time an iPod is released, it is often referred to as iPod Gx simply because they carry the name as the older model and it's easier to refer to.

E.g. Since the iPod Touch launched there has been a hardware update, which people refer to as the iPod Touch G2, for simplicity's sake.

I would recommend an iPod Nano, as the iPod Touch may be overkill for what you need it for, although the iPod Touch would give you more capacity at a price premium, where a Nano would be full a lot of the time depending on the size of your library.

A second hand iPod Touch could be got for the price of a new nano, so look around :)

If you're buying for use in the car, then I'd recommend getting a second hand one with larger capacity. You could get a used 30gb iPod from an auction site, possibly on here, for a good price. Wouldn't need to worry about it skipping - if it's in working order it won't skip at all.

The generations can be explained here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

I don't think getting a touch would be a good idea if it's just for car use, plus GPS can only be used with a signal = iPhone, which will be out of budget.

Thanks for the info :)

I wont be getting a touch, just seems to much for my needs.

Can anyone confirm that a hard drive based iPod will be good for being used in a car ?

Also which iPod are flash based memory ? i understand theres no chance of jumping with one of theses. Can you get iPods with flash memory at 16Gb ?

My current library of music is 9Gb so 16gb should be good for a while.

Thanks Ben

i find ipod touch or phone are to easy to miss hit screen as you drive choose track ie in car. i use a 80gb one on a belking plug in charger that tunes it to the car stereo channel so you use the car speaker to listen to it.. good sound no jumping what so ever and i use 4x4 often down dirt track roads collecting mini diggers or cherry pickers it never jumps but i often misstype or hit wrong part of screen when using ipod touch or iphone so that why i went back to the 80gb one.

The hard drive iPod's can cache about 20+ minutes of music, skipping is not really a problem.

iPod's with flash memory include the Shuffle, Nano and Touch. The high end Nano and mid-range iPod Touch come with 16GB of storage.

I've got an 80gb Classic and 16gb iPhone - both are fine in the car and have never skipped when playing.

No probs with skipping, but battery life is better on the flash based ones in my experience. It should get charged from the fitting kit but mine don't work that well for some reason

It shouldn't skip (iPod Classic) but the vibration from driving could damage the hard drive, so it's not recommended.

Again, that's not to say it won't work flawlessly, but there's always the chance it could die if you hit a speed bump funny :o

iPod Nano goes up to 16GB.

DO what ive done. Get your ahnds on an Ipod Touch, a holder for the dashboard and an FM transmitter.

You can set the ipods screen to be on constantly so it wont lock, then you have quick access to all of your music collection.

If it was going to be kept in the car, I wouldn't go for an iPod at all tbh.
Why not? Nothing stopping you from taking it out each night if you wanted to or were in an area you weren't comfortable leaving it in there.

I've had my 80GB iPod Classic in my car for the past 2 years and it hasn't skipped once. HD-based iPods are fine in a car, they're built for it.

Despite the thief attraction, they're a tad expensive for what they'll be used for.

There are much cheaper options.

Thanks for all the info lads :)

Gonna go for the cheapest one i can find on ebay with at least 16gb.

Gonna also be getting a ipod dock for the house, so it wont live in the car all the time.
