I don't mind if they get rid of tramp drink/ kids drink completely.
Special brew, white lightning, 3 litre bottles of cider, value beers, cheap alcopops (or alcopops in general, horrible childs booze)

I think if i go into a shop and buy a crate of boheme or something for £15 then go to a party or a field rave i've had a cheap night anyway, sure beats going into town and spending £30-£40 on booze. Thats the way I look at it, nice to get 3 crates for £20 yeah but they're usually cheap nasty beers (wifebeater, carling etc.). Spirits are very rarely cheap, nice ones anyway so no odds to me.
Might respark the tradition of homebrew and all.

The government has to intervene though, people are too stupid to drink responsibly. Ok fair enough getting drunk at the weekend after working 40 hours, but getting drunk, smashing windows, cars and even people puts a strain on people who dont deserve it. The amount of abuse medical staff get from drunken chavs/neds is unbelievable and sometimes its even physical abuse.

No, responsible drinkers shouldnt suffer higher prices, but then they shouldnt suffer the consequences of boozed up jobless delinquents.

It won't discourage chavs from drinking, it'll just give them more to fight about.

Jamief, you're from dundee and a software engineer? you wouldnt happen to be in the games industry would you?

There are signs that it worked in Finland, until they reduced tax on alcohol in (I think) 2003, which signalled a period of highly increased alcohol abuse and related issues.

Increasing the price will probably be seen as a form of prohibition by the tracksuit wearing asda goers, resulting in god knows what kind of homebrew becoming commonplace around our council estates.

Oddly enough I stayed in Finland for about 3 months at the end of 2005 and alcohol was slightly more expensive and more inconvenient to get hold of than in the UK (you've got to go to state licenced stores if you want anything other than beer or cider) - none of this stopped any binge drinking. I don't know if the higher taxation that you refer to previously had any impact but I'd still have my doubts, if people want to be irresponsible they will be.

No, responsible drinkers shouldnt suffer higher prices, but then they shouldnt suffer the consequences of boozed up jobless delinquents.

So another alternative needs to be found.

Such as stronger punishment for yob behaviour and more responsibility on pubs/clubs not to serve already overly-drunk people.

I don't drink, and my experience of drunks in the main is very negative, so I say ramp it allll the way up. £10 a can, and hopefully we can walk the streets again :).

And this change will make no difference whatsoever. It will just cost the boozed up jobless delinquents more or they will buy cheap English beer off the guy with the transit.

You need to tackle the problem rather than try and tax it out of existence. More education on how to drink responsibly alongside tougher punishments for drunken criminality. Make being drunk an aggravating factor much like racism is (so a drunken assault gets a harsher penalty then an assault).

Finally tackle the underlying problem, find out why people go out and get boozed up and deal with some of the social problems causing it.

Absolutely barmy idea. This government completely beggers belief. Solve the problem by pricing alcohol out of reach of the chavs?! That'll work for sure......... not. How about a change in the benefits system to cut down on hand-outs as another way to achieve the same end?

So the rest of us who enjoy wine with our meals and fine beer will be paying a good chunk more on each drink. Ugh.
