To be fair to him they were generally formed about 400 million years ago.

Just because we aren't on a plate boundary doesn't mean we won't have earthquakes. There are plenty of big active faults (not as big as San Andreas obviously) underneath and around the UK, and that doesn't include other causes of earthquakes.
