**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

i love steam, but ive decided not to purchase through it because;

a) £45 for the Special edition : £10 more than a boxed
b) No Pre-Load
c) It will take a night to download the game if it is approx 14-15gigs in size

i shall relax with a few beers and play some DoW II skirmish tonight then stroll to the shops and purchase a 'hard-copy'

just a night for 15gb!
lucky you :(

I already have today, but good god the main dea of digital downloads was cheaper purchases.£10 more, even retail stores are only £34.99. Robbery.
When was the main idea of digital downloads to be cheaper?

Better method of distribution, better anti-piracy measures, better method of patching games, sure. But cheaper? I don't think that was ever a main intention.

without the costs of distribution and packaging shouldnt be cheaper?

Why would I get it digitally if I can buy it considerably cheaper elsewhere and still sign it up for the consumer advantages of digital distribution?

The problem is that digital distribution is still a minority way of selling a product and so publishers need to rely on the retail outlets still. So they aren't prepared to give the digital distribution methods the same deals that the big retail chains get.

Technically it should be cheaper as the overall overheads will be cheaper.

The problem is the publishers are setting the prices of any third party games on steam and I seriously doubt any of them want to compete with their main reason for existing.

@chowks - yep I bought special forces edition in a supermarket this morning

I am just installing it now - key has registered ok with steam so when it's finished installation (11 minutes remaining of 18 total...) I will see if it runs OK.

Downloading from Steam

Unfortunately i'm on Virgin Media which means it will cap my bandwidth long before this finishes :(

Otherwise it would be done in 4 hours!

Before I get truly annoyed and go off on a rant about Steam - I have two discs here, of which I've only used the first so far, why can it not install without going through an update process first (which so far is failing as the Steam servers are too busy)?
