I currently (at 6' tall and 16st) drive a 51 plate Fiat Seicento Sporting (Michael Schumacher special edition no less, 1.1l rocking 54bhp! :D)

It is in dire need of a service and new tyres, it has no service history, about 74k on the clock and some **** had dented the bonnet when I had come back from holiday.

Now, my Dad has just offered me £500 (late Xmas/Birthday pressie) to get the car serviced, tyres etc. Sounds good to me.

However, the other option, is to take it to webuyanycar.com who want to see it this coming friday and have said in its current condition I can have £700-750 for it. Essentially this would give me a £1200 budget for a new car.

Now I do a 30 mile round trip to work every day, so something a little comfortable with a little bit of poke (to be fair, anything has more poke than the Sei) would be ideal. I don't want to go mega ghetto if possible and would really like to have less than 100k on the clock, with around 80k being preferred.

I've looked at a wide range of things online this morning, I'm thinking either a hatchback or saloon, maybe a coupe. Probably not to mental on the running costs. I've thought about things like

Saxo VRS
Old 3 Series, although a friend has a P-reg and has non-stop issues
Clio 1.4
Mondeo (although not so keen on them myself)
Fiat Punto/Bravo
MGs, Accords and basically anything else in that price range on auto trader.

So the question is two-fold. Would you service & repair, or spend the £1200 elsewhere, and if so, what would you consider given my requirements.

Bit of a long post, but thanks for your time :)

I would say the £500 spent on the Fiat is money wasted unfortunately. It will need repairs again soon as it's getting senile in Fiat terms!

However, there is the old saying of better the devil you know.

Also everyone will say mondeo on here as that is within budget and the most reliable etc.

It starts with Mon and ends in deo and will perform the task of 30 miles a day in comfort for your 6'1" frame nicely. Looking for a decent mk2 for that money.

The accord is a good shout, I would want a good spec and a vtec engine for that money but expect it to be older than the Mondeo, tho it is more likely that Grandpa has owned it and never even used the vtec. Nice cars.

Don't get something small and rubbish.

There is something I like about the Sei though, it's very chuckable. Although its more like an exoskeleton than a car when I get in it :p

I'll get flamed to hell for this, but sod it.

Have you considered a Rover 25 or 45? Plenty of different versions available, some fairly pokey models out there too.

Reliability wise they're fine as long as looked after, and for £1200 you'll pick up a nice one with lots of toys, sunroof, air con, heated seats (sometimes) etc.

Petrol engine wise you have a choice of 104, 111 or 120BHP (1.4, 1.6 and 1.8) and in derv form you have either 84, 103 or 115BHP (all 2 litre TD).

Nice cars for not a lot of cash, and plenty of enthusiasts for them around :)

Why sell the car to webuyanycar? You could sell privately for at least a grand.

I wasn't intending to sell it, its just an easy option, and the state its in means it won't attract many buyers. I'm not fixed on selling it at this point, just wondered what others would do. I'd rather keep it than faff around with private sales though personally.

I'd at least stick it on ebay at £750 starting price rather than just selling it to webuyanycar without trying anything else.

Comfy commuter mule..... Mondeo it is then.

And I got a Decent Mk2 for £700. £1200 will get you into Mk3 terretory.

And im 6'3"

I'd rather set my car on fire than give it to webuyanycar.com, according to the advert you even have to deliver it to them. Sod that.

What about a Rover 800 Vitesse Coupe ?

They are cheap, reliable, and can munch miles better than a Mundano.

All the toys, full leather, quick too.

You cant go wrong.

I should add it has enormous leg room too, so should be ideal.

Parts are cheap, and fuel economy isnt too bad.

Hi mate.

My sister was offered a certain amount for her Clio, but when she turned up to show them they didn't offer her quite as much as they said they would.

So I'm just saying don't expect to get that much back from them dude.

Same. GF was offered £200, turned up and they said £50 or go away.

Mk2 Mondeo.

My old folks got one for £700, 130K Miles and it just soared through its MOT with no problems.

Solid, good car. Pretty fast and lots of room inside.
