Looking at changing around £1700 for a holiday next week.

Would I be better off chnaging it once I get over there or should I just look for the best price in the UK?

If your looking for cash, I find Thomas Exchange quite competitive. They do charge £5.00 delivery, so take that into consideration when comparing rates.

Get a Nationwide account and then just draw the money out from ATM's when you are over here with no charge and you get the daily rate :)
Crap at the moment though :(

Travelex +1.

Although as was stated - if you can open it in time - get a nationwide account and a debit card (not charged for transactions and the exchange is Visas Rate Below) - it just means you will have to use it there and draw money out of ATMs if you can find them. I have always just used Nationwide Visa debit card & svaed a fortune.

Currently
$1.41 for Visa (no charge with Nationwide)
$1.36 for Travelex.

M&S is $1.35
PO is $1.358

I know, Last time I bought it was $2.07 (and I was waiting until it got to $2.10 until I was purchasing the £2000 worth - unfortunately it didn't make it at the rate I was getting)

We all make mistakes though ;)
