This week only OcUK GeForce 9600 GT 512MB GDDR3 for £73.98 or Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4830 512MB GDDR3 for £86.24

Lookling for quiet 1680X1050 gaming and HD playback.

:)

The ATi 4830 by far as it is comparable to the 9800GTX. The 4850 is equal to the 9800GTX+, all of which are better than the 9600GT.

I have that particular Sapphire 4830 myself in my second PC/HTPC and it is perfect for mid-range gaming and HD playback. The custom cooling on it does an exceptional job, keeping it in the low 30c idle and mid-40c on full load. And the slightly smaller PCB compared to stock 4830 cards may help save a little space inside your computer case.

For the price of the thing, its really good for what is essentially a gimped 4850.

Thanks for that Phatjayunoi :)

The aim is to make my HTPC 'gaming capable' but keep it quiet when playing HD etc.

No problem.

With the bit of tweaking on game settings, the card is perfectly capable of playing some at 1080p on HDTVs or 1920x1200 on 24"+ monitors.

I also keep the fan speed of the card around the 35-40% using ATi's Catalyst Control Center as it offers perfect enough cooling performance whilst still being very quiet.

4830 is a great card (if you can stand ATI) and out the box sits nicely between the 9800GT and 9800GTX+ but overclocks to 9800GTX+ territory easily.

9600GT lacks the SPs to be a long term useful card imo.

I'm gonna keep it at standard speeds for the time being. The system works really well in its current HTPC state so I'm just looking for a graphics performance boost so I don't have to buy a gaming box.

As I'm only surfing and downloading at the moment the HTPC is also my main rig. The idea is to buy a gaming rig when prices settle and then move the HTPC to sit under the Plasma.
