ITV cuts jobs and costs

They're having problems, I just read that myself.

I don't think ITV do anything that brilliant myself, They make a lot of very cheap shows anyway, X factor, Dancing shows, to name two.

They're losing money fast.
I love Corrie ! so as long as that stays I don't mind, its the only thing I watch on ITV bar the football ( I hate the pundits :( )

The shove all that damned advertising down our throats and still can't cut it. Oh well, won't be missed if it just disappeared tbh.

From what they were saying on BBC breakfast this morning, ITV has actually made a profit of about £211 million, the huge loss is write offs due to a merger with Carlton....

I have to say, I'm not surprised that they feel they are not doing well, I can count on one hand the number of shows I watch on ITV...in fact I can only think of TV Burp, You've Been Framed and Champions League football.... so much of the rest is just cheap reality TV shows or entertainment shows.... can't think of anything that would be deemed as 'quality' programming...

It looks from what i can tell like ITV are in some potentially nasty financial trouble, iirc they may be looking at giving up some of their football etc as it costs too much.

For me the sad thing is, that prior to about 5-10 years ago when they found x-factor/reality TV and the accountants took over running it for short term profit, ITV used to be pretty good, these days they have virtually nothing new in the way of ideas for shows, and don't seem to be willing to take any risks in their programming (I used to watch it a lot, I think the last thing I watched on ITV was one of the bond films over Christmas).

Even long term programmes like The Bill are a very faint shadow of their former selves, I stopped watching it about 4 or 5 years ago when it became a cop soap rather than a police drama.

It has already cancelled expensive dramas such as A Passage to India, reduced episodes of The Bill, and halted production of Heartbeat and The Royal.

I doubt whether we will much more of Sharpe. Who knows what the future will be for some of their excellent crime dramas.

There won’t be much left apart from games/talent shows.

The problem is the advertising, I have noticed a lot more recently that they show adverts about every 10minutes now, I was shocked when just after the opening credits of a program (cant remember what it was now) they cut to the adverts!

Hardly ever watch ITV now, nothing worth watching, when they have films on I always turn over at an advert, but then get watching something else and dont bother switching back.

Just get rid :D

They should go back to loads of regional companies who were all good at different types of programmes.

I remember watching The Bill when I was younger and loving it. I also remember that it was a very rare occasion when Armed Police would be brought in, whereas now it seems like every other episode they're having a shootout.

I too rarely watch ITV now. Occasionally they have a decent police documentary on, but aside from that nothing ever catches my eye. They're very much the TV channel equivalent of a tabloid newspaper these days, it's mostly garbage.

Could this not be going along with the times? As now guns seem to be more mainstream in the UK than it was when you were younger. Just a thought :)

Indeed, gun crime has increased somewhat and it's certainly more high-profile than it was, but they've also definitely shifted its focus towards guns and gun crime probably to fulfil the "we need more action!" idea. The problem being that they approach that sort of thing in such a ridiculous way that it just looks stupid.

The last good programme they made was whitechapel, but that had an average ending, we hardly watch any ITV now, except the wife watches Strictly Come Dancing on Ice, ( or what ever it is called) and Wild at Heart.

Its all rubbish otherwise, and their poor excuse for ITV Player is a joke, never works, and when it does the last 10 mins are either black screen with sound, or still pictures with the sound, however the adverts work all of the time.

Good, they are rubbish anyway. Let the market decide their fate.

No taxpayer-funded bailouts, please!

My wife was stopped today by one of those marketing people. They were hawking her opinion on some programme ITV are either re-making or updating. They gave her this dvd and some survey thing, we havent watched the dvd yet but has anyone else been roped into this? If they are cutting back then I wouldnt be surprised if they are re-hashing more old stuff.

None of the domestic terrestrial TV networks makes anything worth watching, with some exceptions.

Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
QI.
Match of the Day.
Gavin and Stacey.

The End.
