Just a heads-up to any users of AVG, 8.5 was released earlier today.

Can be downloaded from here:
http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

Just installing it on my notebook and it's not liking the fact that I didn't uninstall the previous version too much, so I'd recommend you uninstall 8 before installing 8.5!

don't do it..

I've had no problems with AVG 8 myself; the Link Scanner thing was annoying but you can choose not to install that. Tried out Avira AntiVir and wasn't very impressed, the ad that popped up every time it updates was annoying.

AVG is awful, it gives you a false sense of security and it's only when you change you realise how infected your PC is. My brother's PC was running a bit slow with AVG and there were no signs of Malware, but I ran a NOD32 online scan. 18,000+ infected files :(

^same story with on of my mates, pc was sluggish, installed nod32 and before even updating the defenitions, it found over 500,000 (yes, half a million) infected files

AVG is a poo-poo cack-a face

Never had any problems with AVG before, Always found its to be Light,Easy to use and all found good AV. Have used it for about 6 years.....Now maybe its time to change!

Why change then? I have also found it good for many years..

What versions of AVG were you guys who had problems using?? Free or Paid?

Both. At work we initially had a site licence for AVG but then moved to Sophos for the network management. The number of file infections found was in the hundreds of millions.

I've always used AVG FREE and Malwarebytes and browse all round the internet and have never had anything serious. I think its down to the user who's using the PC and how IT literate they are.

I think thing some are missing the point you won't be aware you have issues on AVG unless you try another and see, as been posted above people used nod32 and found lots that AVG is missing.

Yeah i agree with you the Jabbs, No AV will pick eveything up theres always going to be some that will pick up things that others don't. Hense why it's always good time to time to run a scan from something else to double check that you AV isn't missing any thing

corsa, i don't use any av on my home pc's, they just all have firefox with noscript running. apart from the gf's laptop, that has nod32 on it.

if i did use av and went on shoddy sites etc, i'd certainly not pick AVG

With agood firewall you shouldnt need any AV, If you have a good firewall things carnt get in. you only really need AV if you don't have a firewall so you can clear up the things that have got it. If this makes sense?

^^Not a particularly smart view corsa. A firewall is there to try to protect against hackers, most viruses do other things and those that are for hackers are usually to open up exploits and to get past firewalls (can be accidentally user downloaded, can be other routes in, such as through a security breach in the firewall) and then they open up holes in the system security for the hacker to get through. You should always have a firewall protecting your home network (most internet routers have hardware firewalls built in) and at the very least an up to date antivirus running, not AVG. I use Avast since when I first downloaded it, it found viruses that avg somehow missed. I have used Avira, but Avast seems to have better active protection from my experience.

IT Security should always be a layered defence. Relying on just edge firewalls or AV programs or IDS (in the case of enterprises) is a fallacy.

Firewalls won't stop malware that is either executed through a software exploit or user ignorance. Thinking that is will is silly.
