I've bought a cheap bass.

Name me some cool riffs to get to grips with, imprve skillz etc.

Things that spring to mind are Chilli Peppers Around The World, Queen Another One Bites The Dust, erm, that's all...

Cheers.

There's a big difference in difficulty between those to imo. If you've never played before i'd start with easy stuff just to get the feel of it, like queen as you said. It depends on what kind of music you're into really, you're not going to want to play anything you hate.

Most indie bands 2000-present have songs with pretty easy riffs, so that's a good place to start.

Chilis are good to practise your slap/pop skills, as well as rythym in doing that.

Muse can be fun, quite fast sometimes and a variation of techniques in some songs.

The Chain by fleetwood mac or that stupid new one? :p
Rocket by Def Leppard?

Edit:- I'd recommend some Rage Against the Machine bass riffs. Some of them are quite simple yet so, so good. I'd also be bias, them being my favourite band :)

Cheers, I've been playing The Chain already. Has to be done.
Didn't think of that Killers tune.
Agree the Chilli Peppers song is a tad difficult, but it sounds cool. Anything that sounds cool, and not stupidly difficult to learn would be awesome. I reckon the chilli peppers song is a good one - would never have struggled/bothered to shift up and down the neck like that so you see, I'm after anything that will teach me how the bass guitar should sound and what's potential is. Although I'm not talking slap funk tapping harmonics extravanganzas here.
Been hammerring out the 'Bullet in the head' ending and most of 'Killing in the name of' too.
Tool 'The Pot' sounds like an interesting one to learn.
Not really a fan of these new 'indie' bands I'm afraid.
Any other suggestions?

I've always wanted to borrow a bass and have a bash at the following:

Metallica - My Friend of Misery

Muse - Hysteria

Muse - Sunburn (Chorus)

Muse - Hypermusic

Muse - Time is running out
