Some wee cherub threw a stone at another pupil and missed smashing my cars rear windscreen as i left work. Anyway, i caught the little sod and have his details. I didnt speak to his mom as she is at work till 8pm. I spoke to his uncle though.

My question is, what happens with the insurance side of things?

I checked with autoglass and they charge £400 fitted for a new one. Now having seen the family so to speak i know they cant afford that.

My excess is £70 and i now realise i dont have No Claims Protection (i know i know!)
If i report it as a criminal matter to the insurance company does it still affect my NCB? and also do they pursue the family to re-coup the costs? i know he is a little **(&^ .....but i dont want to put unnecessary pressure on the mom.

If i dont pursue it as a criminal matter i still pay my excess but i loose some NCB's. According to my details i would go from 75% full to 72%......

Anyone any ideas as to what happens?

Some policies don't count claiming on windscreens towards NCB- not sure about back windows though.

If it were me, I would pursue them for the money (possibly even small claims court), but ultimately, I would just pay it myself.

Yea. Some companies specifically exclude the glass from affecting the NCB. BUT you have to pay the glass excess, mine was 60 squids.

So find out, and then claim back the glass excess from the little sod....

So what. Report it as criminal damage, make them pay and junior can go without pocket money. That'll learn the little git.

This is the only way of properly dealing with it. Why should you have to pay or lose your NCB for something that was completely not your fault, and the little **** that did it gets away with a slapped wrist.

Put them in their place regardless of whether they can afford it or not.

Who cares if they can afford it or not. It's your window that got smashed because they can't raise their children to respect other people's property.

Report it as criminal damage and make the buggers pay!

I had my front windscreen badly chipped from a stone whilst following a lorry.

Phoned the insurance company, used their preferred supplier (which halfed my excess) and ended up paying £50 for a new windscreen with no effects on my no claims bonus.

Check your insurance policy, as long as you are fully comp you should have a similar experience.

Putting them in their place is great - apart from the fact that we know nothing about the families circumstances. People are far too quick to punish others, if a compromise can be reached that keeps both parties happy that is far better.

From the OPs opening post it was not intentional, so why should he act as though it was?

Intentional or not, the little scrote was throwing stones around where people were driving past. Therefore, he should be made to pay for any repair otherwise he won't learn his lesson.

Hell, I know that if my Mother received a call from someone when I was a kid saying that I'd broken their car window because I was being a dick and lobbing stones about I wouldn't have been able to sit down for a week.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but if a stone's thrown with sufficient force to break a windscreen, wouldn't it have also done the person it was intended for some fairly serious damage if it had hit?

He threw it towards a busy main road which i was waiting to join, if he hadnt of hit me it would have been somebody else's motor or indeed person. His behaviour although not intentional, was reckless at best.

In that case, make the scrote pay.
