1984 Mini Light weight rebuild + 1600 k-series.

The r65 is aswell, its in a such a light car with relitivly small wheels.

Evolotion has put 250+ hp through his r65 gearbox and done a milage of over 10000 miles.

I think this says something about the stigma the k-series has. Hes running standard 1400 just the compression lowered wet liner engines and putting a shed load of boost through them

I think one dyno run he managed 330bhp!

I think thats testiment to the k-series!

I admit the gearboxes arnt the best but should be fine for my use. i dont plan on putting wheels the side of my a small cow on my car or smacking the throttle open coming out of corners!

Brave bit of restoration going on there! Good choice of engine and your justification hits the nail on the head. Nothing worse than over complicating things and finding yourself out of your depth financially or skilz.

Should look nice when it's done, I like the arches, I prefer mini's on 10 wheels they look lower, but as you said if you can't do it then you will have to go with the 13.

50mm ground clearence is probably what ill be looking for.

Its a happy medium for a Mini. Go any lower and you need to stifen it up so much it becomes sort of skittish.

The black minis dampers are set up too hard for the road really. Skittish around tight bends chaseing down bimmers and the like.

You mean it feels as though it's almost slipping on roundabouts and sharp turns? I've been in lots of mini's which feel like that.

For all those who think that the v-pppow is such a great thing.

Blue mini is a B18 running 200bhp.

The car that murders it is a a-series.....

The third fastest 16valve mini is a 1.4k-series with 1.4 bar of boost in a car thats bloody heavy. eg leccy windows and the stuff like that. Oh and on continentals.

13.3 the 1.4 turbo k-series runs. Turbo k-series running just under 200bhp vs. a v-tec b18 in a lighter car. a full second quicker!

The gear ratios are wrong for a mini. please stop spamming my project thread with stuff you know nothing about.

Wheres the LSD in the K unit then? :p B18 should rape both those TBH. Its gonna come down to driver and suspension. K series is light enough to cancel out the effect of electric windows anyway.

PG1 box.;)

Im not putting a honda engine in my car. The b18 is under square.

1600 k-series is over square?

DO YOU GET IT YET?

Rape them? lol My daily mini beats most of the honda minis in a stright line.

A-series

PG1 is a Honda L3 mirrored anyway, just without the equal length shafts and the intermediate bearing supporting the diff side loads unlike in the Rovers. I assume you have a TorSen.

Funnily enough I wasnt actually refering to straight line stuff. Im not really concerned with old school thinking like the squareness of engines, you only have to look at the peak piston speeds in each unit to realise how irrelevant that sort of comparison is. So, no, I dont get it.

Added reliability of a Honda unit would be a bonus and it was probably a bit silly to use the word rape when I dont even know what state of tune your A-series is anyway.

Engine spec of my DAILY mini.

Head:
38x30 3 angle valves.
Offset exhaust guide and valve
isky valve springs
ported to maniflow manifold and else wise as per Visard.
1.5:1 Ratio roller rockers

Block:
Bored to 1293 +20 thou
Cast pistons.
Lighted and balanced metro turbo rods.
en40b crank with counter webs turned down.
steel flywheel
duplex timing gear
tapped oil ways
high flow metro turbo oil pump
high flow metro turbo water pump
Decked to raise compression ratio
300degree rotation cam. will be 320 when rebuilt.

Gearbox:
Helical drop gears stronger then straight cut for this application.
LSD
3.7 final drive iirc
straight cut gears
central oil pickup.

Auxiliaries:
4 core rad full of rust :(
Aldon yellow dizzy
red bull can covering Aldon flame thrower coil
45 Weber on swan neck manifold.

Despite the fact its produceing 118bhp it can still whip a 180bhp b18 type r mini.

Old skool thinking of squareness of an engine lol. Stop posting on my thread if you dont know what your talking about.

You are putting far too much emphasis on the "squareness" of the engine. Long stroke engines will reach piston speed/acceleration limits before a shorter stroke one, but the B18 still manages well over 8000RPM with completely stock internals. The narrower bore of an under-square engines also limits the maximum valve sizes that can be used, but again the B18 has much larger valves than a K series.

I'm a big fan of the K series, but I wouldn't argue that the Honda engines are superbly engineered, and deliver good power in stock form.

You forget something lads, im doing this on a budget and im modifying my own head. my own exaust manifold.

So 1600 k-series 80mm bore 79mm stroke.
280 degree rotation camshafts
My own modified cylinder head probably from a vvc casting as a basis.
my own inlet manifold
4x r1 carbs
mega jolt ignition.
With gear ratios that suit the Mini well enough. 1st gear becomes pretty much redundent as its just too tall.
if i use a pg1 box i get a lsd too!

So ive got 200bhp with gear ratios that suit the car well. with a resonably wide spread of torque. All for less then 750 quid.

Yes the R65 gearbox isent very strong but they are in saxos with idiots at the wheels doing wheel spins left right and centre. A solotion to fix even this is to weld the crown wheel to the diff. problem sorted then.

I get too buy panels a week next friday woot woot!

Dogbreath bigger valves are not always bigger. In my daily i have a problem with valve shrouding as the valves are just too big. My daily will pull 9000 revs if i want it too. However the camshaft is the limiting factor, it just runs out of puff before you get there. the same is apparent in the b18`s too. Go look at a power graph it runs out of puff at 7000.
