How were we hustled???

Reminds me of the day me and the Mrs were walking through Nottingham city center and a bunch of people were handing out fliers for "The Bargain Store" liquidation sale. The fliers had actual items listed with number of stock and price etc. Sale runs from 2.30pm etc. etc.

Went to the place.....obviously an empty retail unit. Huge banner hung on the outside (like a bedsheet) with THE BARGAIN STORE on it, queue of people waiting and two of the dodgiest looking doormen I've ever seen -- long ginger hair, black leather jackets, black shades. Total pikies.

Went inside and it was full of people, they only allowed so many in. Wasn't a store or sale at all...some guy with a microphone behind a raised counter whipping the crowd into a frenzy, getting them to wave their money in the air and all sorts. Only 20 quid...."all I ask is that you do NOT look in the bag you receive until you leave! If anything is wrong, we'll be here for a while and it all comes with MY PERSONAL GUARANTEE!!!".

At this point we walked out without handing any money over, but couldn't help think of all the young couples etc. we saw there who were seriously snapped up in the moment, emptying their wallets for these cretins.

Whilst in san fransisco we were hustled, i already knew about setups but thought id have a go at trying to win some money anyway, or just have a go to say ive 'been there done that' ...

Guy with a table with 3 small cups and a small red ball. He was moving the ball from cup to cup really fast "eanie meanie miney mo, watch were the red ball goes"

There were two other guys there who were playing, one was constantly winning and losing and sometimes picking what was obviously the wrong cup, then the other would come in for a 1 out of 2 chance and sometimes get it wrong and sometimes right. Now im thinking these blokes were/are working with the guy who had the 3 cups with small red ball under (to drag in customers)

Hand over $20, win 20, simple. Sometimes it would be minimum amount though.

I watched for a bit then when i was sure i pointed to a cup, handed over $40...and lost it.
We stayed and one of my mates who was positive it was under a certain cup handed over $200...and lost. Went white as a ghost and walked off with us, not saying much.

Now, i know we were hustled, ill take it as a hard lesson learned. But how the hell did he make the ball not be under the ones we picked? I was watching really closely when he lifted the cup i pointed to (that had nothing under) and then the one with it under and the last one with nothing.

Have you never watched The Real Hustle with that gorgeous babe Jessica-Jane Clement, ahh I see someone else has spotted the flaw in the OPs post as I scrolled back.

Firstly I would choose the actual one I watched it to be.

Then I would randomly choose one of the other ones while watching the one it should be.

Then I would take all of the beakers away and see which one its in!

the belt one is better :D

you get a belt wrap it up in a coil on a table then a member of the public has to put a pen in the middle of the belt so when the belt is pulled it is still attached.

the amount of people i seen fail at this game makes it awesome :p some also get very mad  :D

seen people bets thousands on it !!!

heres a example

you dont need to have watched the real hustle to know this is a scam. you dont even need to know how they do it to know its a scam.

cant believe any sane person would approach one of these games.

One, if not both of the other guys were in on it. Think i saw this very trick on "The Real Hustle" a while back.

Yes it takes 3 people.

Generally a better, a spotter and the person doing it.

We saw it in Barcelona. I confronted all the people in the crowd, and i got chased down the road on Le Ramblas. Funniest day ever.

I could tell there was a women better in on it. She would be every 10 mins or so and win.

Told everyone.

It's worth playing if it's only 50c for the sheer laugh and appreciating the guys skill but jeez, $20 a time? Or $200 :-O

I don't think your friend was hussled really. He saw a genuine oppertunity to double his money, any normal person would have put down $200 in a game of "street chance".

I mean, gambling games on the street not enforced/regulated by any specific gambling commission, of course it's going to be legit!

Edit:- Sorry, forgot the :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
