We always thought the Sega Master System's stealth-black Light Phaser was cooler than our blaze orange NES Zapper, but we never thought it could actually mistaken for a real weapon -- it's pretty obviously plastic, after all. Yeah, we were wrong: a Brazilian man apparently held a 60-year old woman hostage at, uh, phaserpoint for 10 hours until surrendering to police. Next time? He's taking down a bank with a Super Scope.

Meh, I used to pretend my Telescope was a bazooka when I was a kid.

Never thought of taking someone hostage with it though

PC Brigade alert.

The elderly woman was clearly duped by the fake weapon, as were the police. This scenario has demonstrated how a black fake gun, no matter how goofy on close inspection, can be used to threaten others. So work on those debating skills, please.

but a can of black spray paint costs a few quid at most so if someone still easily wanted to do what guy in OP did then they could

He could have gone and bought a real gun equally, so I'm not really sure what your point is. Acquiring something which can be used to threaten is an offense. By your own argument, sawn-off shotguns should be legal because people can modify them anyway.

A black replica firearm, specifically a toy, has no practical use of being black.

If anything this just goes to show why our toy replicas should be decorated in bright colours.

OMG Your like so right and stuff because when I was like a kid and stuff all my toy guns were like black and me and my mates was like always holding up banks and stuff innit

his point is that painting them in a bright colour does nothing as if people want to use a toy gun to threaten people then they easily can by simply painting it black.

i basically said what the guy originally said but it was really obvious his point maybe saying it twice has helped?

So by your account all prevention laws are useless? I say this well aware that Dolph is probably looming with his handgun statistics, but what about speed limits, for example?

Laws are made on occation at the expense of individuals for the protection of others. Some individuals cannot be trusted with responsibility - should the practical benefit of others be forbidden because of the recklessness of the minority? For many cases, I would argue a resounding 'no', but since there is no practical benefit of a toy gun being black, the counter argument has absolutely no weight.
