First up, a big thanks to Troop from these very forums for showing me the ropes up at the Cad West Mach Loop today!! Thanks for a great day fella! :)

I arrived this morning amid snowy scenes as the road to the car park rapidly descended into chaos with cars and lorries stuck everywhere.

After a quick hike up to the photo spot, Troop showed me what settings he used and we settled down amidst the snowy splendour!

I only got back a couple of hours ago, but I've just quickly flicked through my shots from the day and chose these as the ones with the most potential. No processing, and all full frame.

D300 with Sigma 100-300 f4.

First through was a Eurofighter Typhoon;

Next came a Harrier;

There were also various Hawks through the day;

I think it was 11 passes for the day, but the time flew, if you'll pardon the pun!

So basically, if you like planes and photography, get yourself up there and I guarantee you'll have a great time! :) I did! :D

Great set of Photos mate :), really glad you had a good day and the Frontliners turned up for you.

You'll be back for more, it is so addictive :)

See you there again soon

Martin :)

wow! very nice... where did you go to take them...

All the info you need was posted in Troop's thread the other day, but the two bits of info you need from it are...

The location on Google maps;

And a photo showing the route up;

If you can get up there, I'd recommend it to anybody, it really is a good day out.

Troop is right, it's also very addictive, and I'm already planning to go back very soon! :)

How long did it take you to get there ?, im thinking of going but didnt know if i could do it justice in just one day.
Im in Notts btw.

I'de be tempted (And not just because i'm lazy) to shoot some more wide angle landscapey stuff with the planes blasting through from lower down.. Seems a lot of the shots you see from this Mach Loop are all telephoto close in crops of the planes. Would be nice to see some context :)

I'm west of Grantham, and it took me 3hrs 20min each way, so call it 3.5 hours.

It was a long day, but worth it! :)

Yeah, I know what you mean! The aircraft are very close at the point I was at, but I've got some shots of the hawks I took at only 140mm which show a lot more mountain background.

There are people doing those kind of shots you mention though, plenty on lowfly.net for example.

Well..... do they fly all day, every day in the week or is there break at weekends? dont want to get there this weekend and find there is no flying that day lol..

No, you were right to ask!

They don't fly at weekends, it's very much a Mon-Fri operation. :(

I was told that the location I was at is pretty reliable for passes, and you should at least get a few hawks, but if the weather is bad or something else is going on, then it is possible you won't get anything come past.

Just for Info on movements over the week, as Tooks has said 11 on Wed,

A busier day on Thu at the Bwlch, with 19, including 2 F15 passes, 4 GR4 passes, a 2 seater Harrier, with the rest being made up with Hawks. + 2 hours spent hiding from a blizzard which forced me off the mountain at 3 o'clock

Fri being a very quiet and slow day, a King Air and I think 5 hawks, one of them being the Special painted Navy demo Hawk.

:( thats a three and an half hour to 4 hour drive for me but i so want to go any bnb's around there :confused:

Stevo, most of the guys stay in the Red Lion in Dinas Mawddwy, 30-35 a night.

Tooks, one to entice you back from Thu.
