WHY ARE ALL THE PUBS CLOSING? ASK PEOPLE WHO NEVER GO TO THE PUB (mash)

I still go to the pub as I have done for the past 35 years, but since the fag ban came everything's just completely ruined. The atmosphere is gone, as a lot of people have given up coming now. People constantly getting up and going out for a fag, losing their seats most times. This pathetic nanny government thinks they know what's best for us all the time. A seperate section of the pub for fagging would suffice, but still I can't see it happening.

So how does this work in pubs with insufficient space for two sections, and who works the bar in the smoking room?

I'm not on about a fagging room I'm on about a fagging section. Similar to what most cafes had prior to the ban.

But all in all I think the decision should be left down to the publican, not some mindless "we know best" legislation.

Dogs welcome.

At least 8 real ales and numerous continental bottled beers and largers, all of which are kept and served well. You get what you pay for though. £2.80 a pt cheapest ale 3.9% to £4.65 a pt of strong stuff 6% to 11%.

To sit down at a table (not a vertical drinking establishment).

To meet with people (mainly older) from all walks; tonight I was chatting with a TV director, Author, Landlord (different pub), Mature lady student studying Greek, Latin and old Norse and a elderly guy who delivers papers for a living (on foot with his dog). Another night may be people in Insurance/banking/compliance, retail, teachers, businessmen or even my MP.

Decent pub food at £5.95 for Hand made pie, chips or mash, peas and gravy etc.

Books and board games and free newspapers.

What I do NOT get is:

Music, large groups, fancy dress (Otley runners), 'popular crap beer', drunks or ANYONE under 18 (especially kids). :)

The place is thriving because it caters for local residents and beer lovers and provides something of a meeting place that old pubs used to be.

No open log fire but we can't have everything.

If pubs are closing, it is because they are not being run properly IMO.
ooo... put that to music and it could be my Jerusalem!

smoking rooms dont work... the smoke just travels from the smoking areas

Smoking rooms do work, they have extractors above the doorways which sucks the smoke out of the room, it works perfectly well in the local round here.

For the person who said about who will be manning the bar in the smoking room, there is no bar there, its a room for smoking in, nothing more, there are seats and a couple of fruit machines for the smoking patrons to relax with whilst having their cig. Also if there is no space available for a smoking room then smokers will still have to go outside unfortunately, but most pubs are bigger than someones front room so there will be space to convert to a smoking room.

Many will close bacause many youngsters don't want traditional pubs that sell real ale and encourage socialising; they seem to prefer loud music, ice cold pee to drink and binge drinking (vodka before going out etc).

That's nothing new, it was like that when I was a student.

Now, on the few occasions when I do go to the pub, I prefer a boozer with decent ales and a cellarmaster who knows what he's doing.

The smoking thing hasn't really had an effect on me, I was already going less and less when the ban came in.

I think it's just the general rise of the middle class that's causing it. My folks were middle clase and barely went to the pub, same with my wife. A good recession ought to see the return of the lower class and consequently the traditional pub. Oh, wait....

because smoking is a filthy habit and you're an idiot for starting it.

just a guess.
That maybe true, but it's their choice.

Some people don't have many pleasures in life, and going down the pub on Friday night to slowly kill themselves was one of them.

Its easy to point the finger of blame at the smoking ban, but thats just one of the issues at hand.

The industry has been talking about pubs closing for as long as I remember, certainly well before the smoking ban came in.

The bigger issues are the costs to the landlord, and simply that social habits have changed. People just don't go to the pub as much anymore.

Well, that's nice, ignore reality.

Lol! Proof? Or is it just your chipped-shoulder guiding you?

The fact is, anyone solely blaming the smoking ban for the downturn of pubs is full or crap. Perhaps they are too busy puffing away to realise that we are in an economic downturn, as well as the fact that red tape for business serving the public is higher than ever (providing facilities for the disabled for example) and the competition for peoples income with other forms of entertainment is also greater than ever.

I'm a smoker. Since the smoking ban came in, I hardly visit pubs anymore - I'd say I go to a local around 30% as often as I used to, as I only go when it's warm enough to sit outside without getting frostbite.

So yeah, burned.

As a non-smoker, I go at least twice as often as I used to.
