As above really. I want to get around 3.5GHz out of my Q6600 (see spec in sig)
*EDIT* just noticed that there is a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme and a Thermalright TRUE Black Ultra-120 eXtreme, great, so now i have to pic between 2/3 TRUEs -.-
So yeah, is it worth spending the extra dowra for the Noctua (which comes with a fan) or not?

Oh and would it be worth lapping my Q6600? (never done it before)

Thanks,

Flare.

Id go for the TRUE black over the noctua (and ive had both) With regards to lapping it can help with lowering/evening temps but it will void your warranty.

Thanks :D

Right so i shall get the TRUE then, cant decide between the fans, i dont care about noise or cost :p

Which do you think shifts more air at the same RPM?
Seenas the noctua has 9 fins whereas the sharkoon has 7

Thanks :D

the YS-TECH FD1225 fan would give it more air because its faster, 2600rpm.

or get a Delta 120mm fan if u want the best fan.

im guessing the noctua only needls a lower RPM because of the number of fins and fin design?
Where as the YS-TECH has a simpler deisgn, less fins but goes double the RMP

Noctua NF-S12 , 12v performance - 1200RPM, 17dBA, 48CFM

YS-TECH FD1225 , 105CFM

big differents..

or as i said above get a Delta 120mm fan if u want the best fan. it does 190 CFM

I am running a Q6600 at 3.6 with a lapped TRUE and a Noctua NF-P12 Vortex fan on it.

It's in my Silverstone Fortress case and with all the fans almost inaudible, the temp on the hottest core is 69c after an hour of Prime95 Small FFT's.

In fact the only fan that I run at full speed when Priming is the Noctua on the TRUE. All others are at half speed or less. When idle I run the Noctua on the TRUE at 800RPM and get temps of 31 on the hottest core, although I do have speedstep enabled.

I guess what I am trying to say is there really is no need for one of those noisy fans if you have a decent case with good airflow.

thanks diggsy.
So you have lapped the TRUE and not the Q6600?
I do have very good airflow in my case.

Yes, the TRUE needed lapped, it was a well known issue with the older ones, although from what I have read the newer TRUE's have a much better and smoother finish.

EDIT - my Q6600 does not really need lapped, the temps normally sit within 1-2c of each other across the cores.

On my q6600 at 3.8ghz i have 2x sharkoon silent eagles (2000 rpm version) and 3 more in my akasa eclipse, 2 intake and 1 exhaust, all fans are run off an akasa junior fan controller, both cpu and TRUE lapped, temps of 68-68-62-62.

Well i do want to OC to what i can after i get comfortable with OCing.
Could it be worth me lapping my Q6600 then because my cores are currently at
31
31
26/27
25

Is there an intake fan close to the CPU?

EDIT just looked at a photo of the HAF, it seems that there is a large intake fan above the CPU at the top of the case, similar to mine.

That being the case then, I would say it's the reason that 2 cores are lower. I found the same thing once I installed mine in my case. Whilst open bench testing, my cores at idle and load were never more than 2c apart, yet in the case at load they differ 4 or 5c IIRC.

You could give it a try, but it's not guaranteed to even temps up, but it could give a drop of a few degrees which is always nice, this is mine after lapping.

Still a bit of variation in each core but knocked them down a fair bit
