NWN2 terrible performance

I never finished NWN2 so I decided to install it on my new PC last night only to find I was getting about 13 FPS with all settings on max. I last played it with a AMD 4200+ and 8800GT and I was running it almost maxed with no problems.

I am annoyed about this as I am in the mood for an in-depth RPG and other than NWN2 there is nothing else to play:(

NWN2 was terribly coded and it's a terrible game. There are other in-depth RPG's that can satisfy both your needs and your hardware.

I know this doesn't particularly help your situation, but only like 1 in 100 machines will run NWN2 smoothly and for no discernable reason.

I didnt have any trouble. Maybe turn some of the graphics options down? Shadows are a real hog.
My spec E6300 @ stock 8800GT 512 and 4 gig of fast RAM.
I didnt have any problems from the start.

The game is good and well worth ago. Plenty more ways and options when building charactors. The only failing of the game is that it isnt very open ended in that the maps are quite small and dont really have many ways of completing tasks. Its not like BG where you can go where you want and you are left to do as you wish.

The best thing about the game is finding a decent online world to play on, thats where this game (as with nwn1) really shines.

Yeah when it first was released my PC at that time had problems and then my next build was fine. And now new PC is so much faster yet runs the game the worse .... shrugs.

I have most of the latest RPG's which are very enjoyable but hardly of that in-depth old school type. Fallout 3 and The Witcher though excellent games are hardly what I call in depth regarding skills and tactics. I want the sort of game where you have to read up a bit about it to fully understand what's going on.

I game with a LCD monitor so that unfortunately excludes all the old 2d D&D rules games. They just do not make complex RPG's any more unless I have completely missed one.

Unfortunately I don't think it's got anything to do with the settings as my old PC ran the game much much better at the same settings. For whatever reason my PC build and the game do not get along and there is no way I ma going to play on the lowest settings.

Looks like I'm just going to wait for Drakensang to come along. It is just incredible that a small games studio can come with a decent engine while Bioware (may be wrong) come with this pile of poop. Even CDProjekt have worked miracles with same or similar engine.

I found it ran well with settings on highest (except AA) on an 8800 GT so long as I turned shadows down to medium. Also, try not to judge performance from the starting area, it's the worst performing in the game by far I found.

Turn down the shadows and it should be fine, runs fine with 30 fps for me with shadows on medium but when increasing shadow quality the fps dies.

Radeon HDxxxx cards don't get along with older games, I've found. To a lesser extent this also happens with the Geforce 8 series.

Can't say I've found this issue with my setup, everything is faster than my 8800GTS 512/X1900XT, new or old, going back as far as games from 2000-ish.

Well, to give one example I came across, motion blur in the NWN engine makes it look like the card's about to fail. Worked fine on older cards.

What other games do you run?

My old 8800GTS loved this game.

Causes Medieval Total War to crash without fail as soon as a new game is started. As does anything newer than a Radeon 9xxx that I've tried.

'Cause of the resolution?

There's great widescreen mod out for the classics
Widescreen mod for PST, BG TotSC, BG2 SoA, BG2 ToB, IWD HoW, and IWD2

works at any resolution
1680 x1050
1920 x1200

NWN2 was awesome :)

By the way, NWN2 has performance issues but if you install the expansion for it, it drastically improves performance while also increasing graphical effects/detail. So your game runs faster while looking better :)

Unfortunately dont have NWN anymore so can't compare, but have run all sorts; UT2004, BG2, HL2,War3, TA etc. Haven't had any major issues with any of them, not that I remember at any rate (which is usually a good thing!)

Well, I don't know about BG as I don't have it, and I haven't tried Total Annihilation recently. I had problems with any Lucasarts classic game (by that I mean anything before Episode 1 came out, eg TIE Fighter), Unreal 1 engine games, the first two of the Total War series, etc etc. Anyway I'll stop derailing the thread now.

Yeah, the Mask of the Betrayer expansion fixes a bunch of stuff (plus it's more fun to play than the original NWN2 in my opinion). There's also a second expansion out now called Storm of Zehir. Haven't got it but I heard it breaks a lot of stuff that MotB fixed. Seems whoever's in charge of the whole NWN2 update process has really dropped the ball.

NWN2 was a terrible piece of code, even though I had no major issues running it on both a 8800gtx and recently a gtx260. Even a couple of devs have admitted what a nightmare it was. Tons of legacy stuff from the old NWN engine etc and they tried to make it current gen.

A shame as MotB and the last 2 chapters in the NWN2 OC were pretty decent. SoZ did indeed break some things again (bad installer amongst other things) and Atari's penchant for nasty DRM has delayed Mysteries of Westgate adventure add on by 18 months. A real mess, which could have been avoided really....
