Got pulled for having a headlight out, fail

Checking brake lights is quite difficult to do on your own though. Either you have to wedge the pedal with the steering lock or you have to get someone else to do it who you trust not to steal your car.

I can check the high level one from the drivers seat and the others get checked every time I reverse up to a sufficiently reflective wall, which means every time I go to Tesco and every time I visit a customer, which is to say half way through each of my trips.

Or you could reverse up to a wall at night and look in your mirrors, easy to see if a tail, brake, fog or reversing light is out without leaving the car.

The Tesco wall is just plain white, or rather WAS just plain white it's now a filthy grey/brown.

Both my Volvos have had it (a 1990 460 and a 1991 940) I'm aware that some BMWs have it (and allegedly require BMW bulbs for it to work properly), other than that I've never encountered the blub warning system, none of my company cars I've had have had it (all VAG cars) and my 1999 Subaru Legacy didn't have it either.

I don't think it's common. I can see why the Sweedish cars would have it because it's dark a lot of the time there, hence the daytime running lights.

Pretty common now VAG cars have had them for a few years even my girlfriends Zafira has it.

Some cars can even put on a substitute light for example a Merc will use the fog light if the indicator bulbs goes pretty sure BMWs will do it aswell. Interestingly these are options on my Golfs central control module however they are disabled from the factory including flashing the high level brake light when the car detects heavy braking I have enabled these and they seem to work however never been able to confirm if the brake light option works.
