Hi guys just after a bit of advise.

I have decided my Pc is too loud when i'm watching DVDs so i'm thinking about buying a new heat sink and some new fans for my case (lian li v1000).

I currently have the stock Intel heat sink which i assume is making most of the noise? Will the Tuniq Tower 120-LFB fit in my case and more importantly will it fit on my motherboard, the heat sinks on the mother board are very large will this be a problem? Is the Tuniq Tower 120 the best heat sink around for £30?

My mother board: http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2637

I have no idea on which fans to get , i want silent120mm fans with good performance which wont cost me an arm and a leg :p

Is it worth getting any sound proofing for the case such as: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CM-006-AK&tool=3

Does it make any noticeable difference?

Thanks all!

I got 4 Noctua fan's in my case and cant hear them, very effecient and quiet fans.
Have you got decent cable management in your case?
Sometimes loose cables can rattle and add hum if they are leaning on say the hdd's.
Also look at using rubber grommets and washers on all case screws, you'd be surprised what a difference that can make.

The sound proofing, i'd say is only really useful if your WCing.
The best 120mm fans i'd say would be the:
Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin followed by
Akasa AK-183-L2B Amber Ultra Quiet 120mm Fan - 3 pin.

Both fans are extremley quiet/best cfm to noise ratio, bit expensive tho.
And i'd expect that your stock heat sink is producing most of the noise, as the manufacturers just add the bare minimal heatsink to do the job (around 3k rpm so it's pretty loud), so yeh the Tuniq Tower can be loud but if you lower the RPM to around a 1000-1.2k it should be inaudible.

Check the dimensions of the Tuniq Tower (131mm x 108mm x 153mm) and see for yourself if it will fit your motherboard.

You could do the 7volt mod on your fans , quick and easy to do and will cut noise a lot.
Can also stop any fans with your finger or something to find the worst offending ones :p

I can vouch for the alaska fans. They're pretty cheap and very quiet. I've got two as front intakes on an antec 300 and they're pretty much silent. If you have a fan controller then its even better when you're not on full load.

I did think about doing a 7v mod but since the fans are just basic generic fans they might not be able to cool my system sufficiently.

if I were to get the Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-001-NC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

Do i just get the fan or do i get the rubber things that act like screws or is it just OEM?

I'll measure tomorrow but would be nice if someone with the same motherboard could ust say if it fits or not :D

Also if anyone can recommend any different heat sinks as i'v only really looked into the Tuniq Tower tbh.

Thanks.

is it just when watching DVDs? If so, is it your DVD drive itself?

I rip all of my DVDs to my hard drive and watch them through VMC so that wont be the cause if only it was that simple ;)

You get rubber grommets, washers and rubber fan screws with the Noctua's, as well as 3 different voltages cables.
Certainly a premium product!

I'd get the Fansis kit as well, only £6 or so:

+1 for noctua!
You can get the Noctua NH-U12P, which is the massive heatsink and comes with a high quality silent fan. It might cost you a tiny bit more, but is definately worth it though. Best decision I ever made. It dropped my idle temperatures by 20 degrees C from the intel stock heatsink. At load it will not go above 50. Just make sure it fits your case.

agree with the rest of the guys buy a noctua CPU cooler and depending on your budget a whole lotta new case fans but if ur skint have a look at the arctic cooling alpine 7 pro just the same as your stock fan but a whole lot quieter and cooler

I dono money isn't really a problem but i can't really get my head around £50 for a heat sink. If i'm going to spend £50 i might as well as jump into custom water cooling.

So i think £35 is the max I want to spend on a heat sink. So any other ideas?

Hey guys,

Just been looking at review and i have come arcross this one: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/old-new-coolers_15.html

The key quote i picked up on was "And if you own a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme, you still do not need to worry, as this quiet cooling solution with only one fan is as efficient as Noctua NH-U12P with two."

So would these two be a good solution:

and this fan:

Hi Superflyguy,

Are you sure the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-001-NC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4 comes with what you said or is it the below as it is more expensive and shows more than just a fan in the picture.

Ok so i have Fans nearly sorted, just need a heat sink ;)

Yes all the bits are included with all the Noctua's.

Got a tuniq cooler on my e7400 very quiet have it at lowest fan speed it's silent and @ idle 27c. Will be ovrtclocking it soon. Got 2 x think its antec fans £5 on ocu. Noctua is very good but it's £50. For a half decentWatercooled cpu loop you be looking at a slight more then £50.

Can someone just give me a link for a CPU stability test

The two Noctua fans are for different puropses. As mp260767 has said the NF-P12 is a 'power' fan specifically designed to work with heat sinks; the NF-S12 is the 'silent' fan designed to be used as a case fan. The Noctua's are very good and come with everything you could need hence their premium price!

I thoroughly recommend them :)
