Street Fighter (SFIV, SSFIV, HDR)

I've got a hori and I tend to play better when its on my desk. I only play on my lap late at night cause the desk makes a lot of noise when I start bashing out combos :D

Sorry to sound like i'm deliberately going against the flow, but i can't help but notice the player that the majority seem to be afraid of in the ocuk ps3 tournament is ojste, a man that doesn't use a stick. Speaking from personal experience i can do all but the final hard trial with abel and the majority of hard trials with all other characters just using a pad.

In short, i don't feel a stick is that important. When i can pull off an unblockable ultra/super combo on command using the PS3 pad i feel that there's no need to invest.

This is obviously an opinionated subject however, so i'm not ever going to pretend that my word is gospel.

I really like the stick and enjoy playing SFIV more than without one, but I am under no delusion that it makes me any better :p

Tbh if i had to pick a man that wasn't under delusions it would be you (drunken wub wubs :p). Enjoyment factor is very much understandable as it does feel like the arcade, but i'm getting a bit fed up of people claiming that you need a stick to play well (that notion is rare on these forums fortunately). Fact of the matter is, at least 50% of the better players i've faced have been pad players (i've made a point of asking just out of curiosity).

I don't think it makes you any better and would be down to preference - the only reason I asked bout em is because the 360 dpad is horrible.

I find the Shoto characters easier to play with a pad (Ken, Ryu, Akuma and so on) but that's because I'm still not all that great at getting quarter circles to come out on demand, but aside from that I enjoy using a stick a lot more, practice will improve it further in time.

I semi-think that's why so many people play Ken, very pad friendly for special moves and basic combos.

Ken's flaming-dragon-punch deal is so easy to pull off on a pad with a wiggle motion. You could do it 100/100 times in your sleep :o

Good thing that it is possibly the most easy to punish special move in the game. Command throw ownage is the way of the future i tell thee.

The reason the dragon punch is so easy now is because Capcom have put in a shortcut for it. Instead of having to input:

Forward, Down, Forward-Down + Punch,

you can instead use:

Forward-Down x 2, Punch.

This makes the dragon punch easier to pull off than the fireball.

Generally the timing window in SF4 is more forgiving than earlier versions, to allow the game to be playable on joypads. I remember never being able to pull off Zangief's spinning piledriver in SF2 on my old SNES controller as it requires a full 360degree rotation on the D-Pad. On SF4, I can now do it consistently using the Xbox 360 analog stick.

I managed to get hold of a Hori EX2 last week , but so far I don't think it has helped my game much as I've only ever played fighting games using a pad before....:(

the one clear cut advantage that the stick has over pad is speed. speed is only one portion of the game though and its importance is character specific... a much larger part of the game is timing which a stick isn't going to help you with.

of course there is a comfort preference, people are going to like different things. in terms of improving your actual performance though, a stick aint gonna do much for you unless you are genuinely held back by the pad (eg. speed).

i have done over half of the hard trials and i will say that a stick would have made next to no difference on what i have done so far, but i will also say i feel a stick is needed for certain people such as c.viper (seriously what the hell, i swear im fast but this takes the biscuit!)

Had my first long online session on this in a while and what the hell has happened? It was a rare occurrence for people that lost the first round to not disconnect, out of the matches i played i would say 75% resulted in my opponent disconnecting, 20% beat me and 5% were good enough to stick around when they were losing.

Utterly lame. I don't understand why they don't keep a log of how many times a person has quit or something

Has anyone bought the Shoryuken Pack yet ? I cant lie, I'm tempted!

Abel wears an outfit two sizes too small for him in his costume pack. I don't think i shall be investing.

that does sound lame streeteh, it just happens with beat em ups... once people catch on that they can disconenct with no consequence then its pretty ****

thats why player matches > ranked matches

Whats everyone playing this with - PS3/360 controller or do you all have fight sticks?

Currently I'm playing with my wife's Hori Fighting Stick 3, while I wait for the parts for my custom to be delivered (Sanwa stick and 6 Sanwa OBSF30s). As soon as I've got my custom built I get the impression that my wife will want her HFS3 modding. The stick itself is just awful :/

Still, maybe it's just me being awful :p That said, the stick is so more straightforward to play with than the pad. As has been already mentioned, there simply aren't enough face buttons!

edit - RE : Disconnects. I've only had one person disconnect after the first round, but it's only the last day or two that I've started winning online :D

Really getting fed up of the pathetic tactics that some play employ to win.

Everytime someone picks Akuma you can be garaunteed that they'll throw high fireballs, then if you get hit to the floor they'll spam the double hit hadouken and catch you in a 1 move loop. Easy enough to avoid, but whenever you get close they use the teleport move and rinse and repeat until the round is over.

Wouldn't mind so much if it was a rare occurrence but every single Akuma fight? I must have fought 5 of them like that last night when some mates came over and everytime someone selected Akuma then everyone would go "ohhhh"

Oh, and when I won fair and square I get messages calling me all sorts. Lovely :o
