If it is recoverable then the company that sold it to you is breaking the data protection act. Never tried to recover stuff from a formatted drive though - it should be doable for the parts that haven't been overwritten.

Its the use of the information that may get you in trouble, but not for the "unformatting" reason, but more along the lines of defamation or misrepresentation.

if you manage to recover some data, purely for the sake of your own personal curiosity, i'd recommend you don't tell anyone, don't spread the data to other computers or storage mediums and delete it when your curiosity has been sated.
