Well you've just potentially told 10s of thousands of people

It's probably illegal under the data protection act - recovering/looking at data that's not yours etc.

I cant imagine its illegal to do that if you own the hardware. What you do with the data after that might be illegal.

Did they make you sign anything saying that you wouldnt do anything like that?

unless you signed anything saying that you won't recover it, then I don't see what's stopping you.

If it is recoverable then the company that sold it to you is breaking the data protection act. Never tried to recover stuff from a formatted drive though - it should be doable for the parts that haven't been overwritten.

You own the HDD, anything on it is yours.

Its the use of the information that may get you in trouble, but not for the "unformatting" reason, but more along the lines of defamation or misrepresentation.

Recover away.

You own it - I'd guess that any badness happened at the point where someone gave/sold you the drive with recoverable data still on it.

You would only get in trouble if you started posting juicy stuff on the net. If it is just really cool pictures of cars then you would be safe to upload them everywhere. But anything dodge you see you will just have to keep your mouth sealed. ps i hope you find cp so you bust the companies ass :p
