i7 or x4 940 BE

Best? The i7 bounds ahead in multimedia work (encoding and such), and the platform (i7 X58) is the best for multi-GPU solutions from what I hear.

That said, in most games, the 940 BE should do just as well. Is the price difference worth it? Well, that depends on what you plan to do with the system.

Neither. A PII 720BE, faster in some instances than a 940, and it's AM3 so you're starting with the new AM3 DDR3 platform for a LOT less than the Intel alternative.

AMD are back in the game with the P II, I would support tjem if I was you. my rig gets 21k in vantage so the p II can push out some big numbers..

Always have since before the glory days of the K8. It's always nice to say that when a company is on top of its game, but truth is, I'm no fan boy. AMD always offered me a nice, incremental upgrade path. While there were times it wasn't the best performing benchmark killer out, my rig as a whole has always been more than capable of running anything I could throw at it and I work in game dev.
