What would you do?

Update

Well, two weeks into owning the Celica, my mum has turned round and said she wants it back basically :o She doesn't like the Golf (she was in tears on the day she first had it) and thinks she's made a mistake. Puts me in a hard position but they went to Toyota the other day and saw another Celica which they said they'd buy me, allowing mum to have her Celica back and Dad ends up with the golf.

So me and Dad went to Toyota today to look at this other Celica (same but Black and 140bhp, without a spoiler). Straight away I hated it from the first glance. However, next to it was a grey MR2, 06 reg, 22k miles. It's a 1.8 TF300 (the final 300 made, number 128 stitched into the back of the seats). Took it for a test drive and I love it. Not as fast as the Celica and the acceleration isn't as good but it looks/sounds so sexy :D Going back tomorrow to hopefully seal the deal. Concerned about the practicalities of 2 seats but its rare I make use of 4/5 seats as it is.

So, back to the subject, "What would you do?" :)

Faster car, but risk upsetting parents, or take the MR2 and make mum happy. Way I see it is I had a Corsa a few weeks ago, so i'm happy with either :)

!

Try this for an experiment.

Get a digital camera. Get someone to take a picture of you sitting in the drivers seat of the Corsa with the window down and your arm resting on the window sill.

Next take a picture with the same pose sitting in the drivers seat of the Celica.

Notice the difference?

Well i'd definately do whatever i could so your mum wasn't upset, after all, she basically give you the car! Can she give the Golf back to the garage and get her money back?

Just a quick question, how old are you? And how much driving experience have you got?

This is relevant because it is very very different to the Celica, it is much more of a handful in the wet and is a lot less practical. It is a fun car to drive but you will have to get used to abuse from others who think its a bit girly (I actually really like them though).

The MR2 will be harder to work on due to the position of the engine (therefore more expensive servicing), it's also RWD which, whilst popular around these parts, is not always the best choice if you don't know what you're doing. Insurance will also probably be higher.

OTOH, if you don't stack it the next time it rains heavily, the MR2 will make you a better driver in the long run. Just be careful until you get used to it. It's certainly not point and squirt like the FWD cars you've been driving so far.

Personally I'd keep looking, don't rush into this (and I'd be after an S15 Nissan Silvia Spec R ;) ) and buy something you'll later regret.

I'm not surprised your mum hates the Golf though. I'd hate the Golf after driving a Celica. She obviously has a decent taste in cars.

I guess i'll just have to be extra careful when its raining then. Sealed the deal this morning, pick it up Thursday :)

So.. Instead of being given a Celica because your mother didn't want it anymore, you're having an MR2 bought for you?

You must have nice parents :)

At least you're getting it in March, it's normally November - February that is the culling season for RWD cars driven by young people.

Well I donated a 6K car into the equation. And got messed around in the process which my mum feels bad about. We'd paid to transfer plates over and everything and they only came through Friday. Gotta do it all again now. Ah well it's all good, can't wait to get it, just hope we have a nice summer so I can have the top down regularly.

Oh right, when I saw Corsa I immediately thought £300 L reg etc. :p

Nice car. Congrats.

Won't be a handful at all. Those late model MR2's are incredibly tame compared to the older models. Bags of understeer first on this model though. Just don't do silly things like abruptly let off the throttle mid corner when giving it some.

This. This is how I wrote off my Subaru (which had rear biassed AWD), though admittedly the lift-off was caused by a sudden engine failure.

Was only doing 45mph and it wasn't a sharp bend or anything, it was still enough to send me off the road backwards.

Engine failure... probably locked the wheels or something crazy :o

I really doubt 45mph on a slight bend, no matter how much you were egging it on, would be enough to get lift-off oversteer. Especially on a Scooby AWD!
