BMW X5 Le Mans

I'm not much for the 5 Series on stilts, that said, I like the sound of that one in the vid.

If your going to have something to sit high up in and have fun, the X5 is certainly one route to go down - personally, I don't like the Porker 4x4 - each to his own yada yada....

Alas, many Cayenne & X5 drivers think they can intimidate artics as they tend to other road users - not a dig @ will btw - ..... ;):D

the X5 was released a few years earlier than the cayenne. and it was the best tarmac 4x4 by a long shot.

also, the X5 LM was made in 2000!

This is an interesting post, and I'm not having a go at you at all by the way, but how would/could you modernise the Mac other than the aesthetics of the thing?

Ceramic brakes. I imagine there are better modern tire compounds that would help in addition to newer suspension technology. I guess you could add all sorts of fancy electronics and things like active aero.
The Performance section on Wiki is quite interesting. Compare the lateral G-force that Mclaren can pull with the Konigseg  -> it is a big difference.

I'd still choose the F1 over most supercars as it is though :D

They would defeat the object of the car though.
The whole raison d'etre of the Mac was automotive purity.
Adding any of the above (other than more modern tyres which is a given anyway) would detract from this.

Fair point :)
I think new tires alone will bring it very close to a lot of modern cars. After all it is a very light car (only the Konigseg comes close in supercar terms I think?)

What always makes me shake my head is the Veyron comparison. People in the main seem to have completely missed the point of the Mac and don't realise that the aim was never to produce the fastest car in the world. The car would've been a lot faster than it ended up being if that were the case and they would've almost certainly gone with forced induction to get big bhp figures. Hell, the design brief was only for 550bhp but BMW's engine department got so carried away they ended up breaking that by approx 75bhp.

Yeh I try not to compare it against the Veyron. Two very different machines. On the comment of forced induction - I don't think many cars have bettered it for pure power without turbos or superchargers since have they? TVR Speed 12, Murcielago LP640, Enzo.... (can't think of anything else off of the top of my head)

Oh the LP Lambo has more oomph as have a few others, but IIRC they're all bigger engines than the Mac and crucially heavier both in terms of engine and the entire car.
The Mac is one of the few cars of it's type (other than recent addictions like the Zonda/CCX etc) that I've never driven and that really pains me. Been in a couple but they wouldn't let me drive it and that really hurt.

Count yourself lucky! Fastest thing I've been in that I can think of is probably my mates old Civic which had about 200bhp :p
Guess it is all about knowing the right people.

I've been very lucky but the Mac above all else was the jewel in my crown and so far it's been denied. It really stuck in my throat when they told me I wasn't going to be allowed to drive it as I'd been told (or maybe I'd wanted to read it that way) that I was going to be allowed out.

:(

4X4 = Luxury transportation but certainly not a driver's car. How many pictures in the Daily Encounters thread are of nice 4X4s. Precisely, nobody cares.

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched that Hans Stuck Nordschlief video , easily the best 'ring video of all imo.

That thing sounds monsterous. I love these kind of out of production projects showing basically "look what we can do" this one is a great one.
