The new ride ...

If I had two kids, a Compact hatchback would be at the bottom of my list. Even if I wasn't interested in performance I'd still want a bigger car, hell I can't even get a weeks shopping for three people in the back of a Focus so how will they fare with two kids? What happens if they have a 3rd kid? They'll need to sell it and waste a whole lot of money in depreciation for something bigger.

Perhaps the wife just liked that particular car. Women judge cars by appearances. Puntos are not too bad but perhaps something more spacious like a Golf would have been more ideal.

You missed the point Janesy, I had the car 4 years, it only required a battery in that time.
The service cost, added to other things like tyres soon needed changing, exhaust likewise etc, means It would start costing more to keep than it was worth.
I wanted to go for a new or nearly new car anyway, and power is not on my list of priorities.

As for space, TBH its not bad, the wife can sit behind the drivers seat with me in it (and I am 6'3"). The boot is probably a tad bigger than the 156, and because its a hatch, its easier to get bulkier items in.
It is a small car, but it doesn't suffer as much as some inside.

3rd Kid ? not on your nelly lol.

My cousin bought one of these brand new too, it broke down 4 times in the two weeks (might even have been one week I think). Electrical faults I think, but afaik Fiat couldn't find anything wrong. Funny thing is I told them that would happen, although I never thought it'd be that bad. Not sure how it's been since they swapped it for a different Punto.

Fiat = fix it again tomorrrow, its just living up to its name...
also italiens and electric just dont mix, my ex gf alfa wouldnt start is a hint of moisture is in the atmosphere unles u speed atleast 5 minutets taking the cables for the starter motor off and wiping clean...

See, even you admit that car is not ideal. If my wife/girlfriend (if I find a woman mental enough to go out with me :p) tried to dictate to me on looks I'd ignore her.

You will need to service your car every year to keep the warranty up. Also your new car is not immune to tire wear or using consumables so I can't really see where you are coming from. BUT if you are happy with it and it does what you need then you are entitled to ignore me.

If you were buying a car primarily for her then I'm sure you'd play nice :p
Completely agree if you could only afford to run one car for you and the wife to share though. I'd tell her to sack up and drive what she's given.

No offence mate but you're 21

And you are 22, so epic fail in the patronising stakes there. He's one up on you as well in that he actually has his own car rather than banging on about his Mums constantly.

Take my mum for example. She just bought a brand new Mini Cooper for delivery in April

You are nothing if not predictable :D

I don't understand people buying new - and then saying I've spent 10k so I can get get 10 more MPG/save on servicing!

Still - if it makes you happy why not.

Yep, it will cost £150 ish per service, and tyres along the line. in 5 years the services wouldn't amount to more than one service and an exhaust on the 156. But the point is I was going to change it anyway, just decided to do it a little earlier than I initially planned, Why spend money on the car thats going to be PX'ed in a year :)

What is it with the motors section. If anyone buys a new car they get slaughtered. Has it occurred to you that the people who buy cars brand new spend a substantially smaller percentage of their income in the first place?

Just accept that some people like the idea of having a brand new car, and be grateful Fox as you wouldn't be driving your beloved 530i if someone hadn't shelled out for it in the first place!!

I have a friend who has this mentality, he's not filthy rich or anything.. Just likes new cars. Some people are like this and I'm glad because it's those people that provide the bargains for the masses.

This is probably the most irrelevent and downright misleading statement in this entire thread

I would imagine there is no link at all between percentage of income spent on a car and tendancy to buy new.

There is nothing wrong with buying a new car, I was questioning the justification and reasoning behind it. Also I know people who spend in excess of %120 of the yearly wage on a new car, so your argument is irrelevant.

I would LOVE to buy a new car, but unless I can justify the financial rapeage that comes along with a new car so for the time being I'll stick with used cars.

Yeah but you'd be pretty insane to spend even £10k on a new car unless you were earning £30k/year. It's simple economics and common sense.
