The new ride ...

just how big is the cabin of the punto (which is smaller than both in terms of size)?

It is good in proportion to the size of the car, but I would have thought the cars you mention would be more roomy ... not having been in the back of a focus or recent 3 series, I couldn't compare from experience, perhaps I have my seat more upright or something lol.
her knees were touching the seat, but not pressed into it and she said it didn't feel uncomfortable.
Its not somewere she would normaly sit as its ocupied by the kids, but when looking over the car we tried it just to see.
My chair was admiteddly a click or 2 off all the way back, because the pedals are quite far forward (in comparison to the 156 at least) and the steering column adjustment gives me plenty of leg room.

:)

That was in some ways a compliment, as you've stopped spamming...but then you have been told off. :p

I never did "spam" motors. I've only ever spammed the test forums and a few odd threads in GD.

You just tend to call anybody who doesn't agree with you or accept your opinion a troll.

Anyway, let's not ruin this thread with bickering.

Fox if you earned say £45,000 a year would you still buy 2nd hand..

Almost certainly. I'd probably have an E55 AMG or similar. Buying used isn't always about 'saving money', sometimes you prefer something a little better than the sort of stuff that your budget buys brand new. I could have had a new Punto instead of my car but somehow it didn't quite appeal ;)

That is because most people do not think of depreciation as a running cost but as the downside of buying a new car which he obviously has decided to.

It may not be what you or I would do but some people appreciate having a new car. I don't think what you or I have to say to them after they have bought it is going to change anything.

Before somebody starts accusing me of being a new car snob, I'm simply playing devil's advocate - the only vehicles I've bought myself were 9 and 18 years old.

Fox if you earned say £45,000 a year would you still buy 2nd hand. I'm willing to bet you would go for an old shape M3. Where as a lot of people wanting a BMW would probably go for a brand new 330i or something like that. I'd do the latter personally because if you're spending that much money you might as well have something that's truly yours.

Given that a brand new 330i is £30k+ and an mint e46 M3 can be picked up for 20k, you're comparison is a bit strange?

Not really no, I mean people have posted stuff in my motors threads that I don't agree with, but they are not trolls. :)

But as you say, no point bickering, this thread is full of completely OT stuff already.

But Fox, think of the savings you could have made with a new Punto instead of the 5....:p

Why do you put so much importance on earning against people's car choices? FWIW i earn well in excess of that figure yet run an old car i bought for just over 8 grand. Why? Because there is no damn point spending much on a car used for daily duties imo given that the market for used cars is so low. If i wanted a brand new equivalent car i would have to drop £50k or something stupid, its just not worth it. Most people i know are of the same opinion. Buying new private cars is a mugs game unless the money is literally irrelevant to the buyer, of which is most certainly isn't in the case of a Punto purchase.

I still think you'd be surprised to see how many people would prefer a brand new Punto over an old 530i. I'm not one of them by the way, I'm just making a point.

For the record I'm not the one trolling and starting arguments. You lot are the ones slaughtering people who buy new cars. Fair enough if you disagree but you could play nice instead of being so abusive and rude.

Fella, i earn more than that and buy 2nd hand.
Your points are crap tbh.

Nope I didn't, I just accepted it as a given TBH. new or second hand its gonna depreciate.
Given that the cost of a year old one to the same spec would at most, save 1k (not that I could find many in the same spec, with that engine) I thought what the hell, I have been driving for over 20 years, would be nice to have something new for once :p

There's a lot of people throwing around wild generalisations.

There's people who buy new and there's people like me who buy second hand, not always to save money but to perhaps get a bit more car for whatever budget I have. Whats the point of argueing and making stupid/sweeping comments and generalisations because they don't agree with what someone else has to say.

Wtf? what a stupid comparison!
In general, people do not buy brand new 530i's for themselves. They are aimed at a completely different market for the punto (which is aimed at private sales!)

please, get a clue what you are talking about!

You lot will simply never understand the attraction of having a car brand new. It's not a 'mugs' game, the people buying them would not be able to afford them if they were 'mugs.' Is Spie a mug? They're simply prepared to pay for the privilege of having a new car. Accept it and stop bitching.

Anyone who buys a brand new 3xxi series can afford an E46 M3, but most people aren't so bothered by engine but more so the fact it's new and the 'latest thing.' Not to mention when you look at an E46 M3 you can tell it's old, where as the new 3 series coupe M Sport is a bit of a head turner to be quite honest.

You are the one who is bitching. You are the one who came in and started abusing anyone who didnt say 'great choice of car!!'.

I suggest you rethink your posting habits fella, most people here think you are a **** :]

Oh, i would love to buy a new car, but at the moment I have better things to spend my money on that a depreciating lump of metal.

Perhaps in the same way that you've never understood the attraction of owning your own car? I've driven many brand new cars (I took one from 6 miles to circa 1500 miles for example). The appeal is shortlived and purely pyschological. Once it picks up its first stonechip or its first scuff on the inside of the front door, its simply another used car.

Shame you can't make an intelligent, balanced and well thought out post that makes me think 'maybe it's not a bad idea'. Instead you make a load of irrelevant and pointless posts which don't make much sense.

Explain the attraction, what does it matter if you're the first user or not ?

Spie has bought a very decent car though, not a small hatchback.

What's the point of having a new car if you can get a car which is far superior in all ways?
