I'm currently building a new system, but have stopped.....

With the release of the i7 processor, would anyone think that the price of the Qxxxx and Exxxx CPUs should go down? I haven't noticed an obvious drop so far (been keeping my eye's on the Q6600).

As I've already commited myself to a s775 cpu by buying the m/board and ram, so I'm loathed to chuck it all in to start again for an i7 build. My new system has been in the 'building' stage for a few months, with me buying each new part on arrival of my next wage slip. I have now come to the two most pricey bits - CPU and graphics card.

I would hope that when/if i7 CPUs reach sub £200 priced we might see this happen??

Whats everyone elses thoughts on this? Is it worth waiting for prices to drop? And do you think they actually will?

i think it will be a while yet. if in the end you maybe save £50 you have to ask if it was worth it waiting all that extra time without completing your build.

I wouldn't hold your breath as the older chips are still going to be popular as upgrade choices for socket LGA775, due to this there will still be a greater demand for these chips than the newer i7. Where there is demand there are high prices.

(what them half in price as I hit enter:D)

i7 will have no effect on S775 prices as i7 is the all singing all dancing triple channel enthusiast platform, which is very much aimed at a niche market.

i5 on the other hand might well effect S775 prices as i5 is the dual channel mainstream platform & successor to S775. the 2 will coexist in Intels line up for awhile so ide be surprised if there wasn't some price cuts to S775, if only to try & clear stock. but i certainly wouldn't hold off on a purchase waiting for that to take effect.

noob question time :), any idea when the I5 is going to be hitting the shelves? and do you know where i can get any more information about that becuase all i can find out at the minute is that its a P55 chipset and MSI already have pictures of their motherboard out on the net (so i can't imagine that the release dates will be too far away)

I would say no. Look at the price of the Q6600, It never really dropped more than a few £ and then slowly climbed. The E6600 was the same price for about a year untill it was no longer stocked. The E68*0 were always expensive untill they were no longer stocked. Take a look at how much it would cost to buy a s939 athlon 64 x2.

They already did drop, I can't see them dropping too much more. Q9650 is going for £276 - there's still places in Ireland charging €400 for it! I can't see another price drop in the short term, it already looks a good price.
