I thought I would try AMD again so I purchased a Phenom 940, an ASUS M3A79T-Deluxe and 2 X 2Gb Crucial 1066 memory.

I always build outside the case so if anything is wrong it is easier to get at.

I put it together, switched the PSU on, the power button lit up, I pressed it, the HSF whirred into life then nothing, no beeps, nothing.

Searching through this forum it appears I need to update the BIOS, which would not be a problem if I had an AMD processor to use , but I only have Pentium processors at the moment, which means I have got to buy another AMD processor just to flash the BIOS.

After paying £155, for this board it really ****es me of to have to pay out more money for an item I will only use once.

I shouldn't think OCUK would expect you to buy another cpu just to flash the BIOS. Have you phoned them and explained your situation? I should think you could send it back to them so they can flash it for you. After all, it isn't fit for purpose.

They may have some wiggle room if they want as the ASUS M3A79T-Deluxe is only described as socket AM2. I'm more interested in the situation of the cheaper M3A78's and those support "AMD® Socket AM2+ multi-core processors" according to the product descriptions!

Can you not do a blind flash using a floppy and EZFlash or whatever it is called now?

The EZ flash still needs you to be in Bios to action it, their DOS based thing is the AFUDOS utility, but again I don't think this will let you just fire it up with a floppy attached and off it goes!

I might be wrong.

I like the idea of contacting OcUK and even if you have to pay £10 for there and back, it's cheaper than buying another processor, failing that perhaps they could send you a board with the bios already flashed and exchange it with the courier who delivers for the one you've got?

After all, as the guy above said, it's technically be sold to you as not fit for the purpose you intended which essentially is more ASUS' problem as we buy this stuff based on their blurb and reviews.

Might not be EZFlash i'm thinking off, most mobo's have a 'blind flash' option where you can bung a floppy in with a BIOS and force a flash, it is a bit hit and miss.

Meh, prolly easier just to get OCUK to do it, or source a temp chip to flash it.

Of course you could buy another cheap low end CPU, put it in the mboard, decide you ought to upgrade to the latest BIOS then boot into windows/whatever and "discover" that the performance isn't sufficient for your needs at which point I think you could invoke distance selling and send the CPU back. Bit underhand and not something I'd feel comfortable about doing.

The problem has been solved.
A couple of miles from me is a small computer place, I rang them this morning and they said if I bring it in they will put a CPU in and flash the BIOS for £15, while i wait.
It is now up and working.:D

I do not blame OCUK for this, that is why I titled this thread ASUS AGRHHHHH.

Good to hear you got it sorted.

My recent Mobo purchase turned out to have an incompatible bios with my original CPU purchase, caused a bit of a headache, I think in future I may now ask if for a bit extra £££ bios can be updated, or at least get confirmation of the bios edition.

This works I've found...

I'm not as lucky as you, tomorrow it's going to cost me £32 for a crap chip I don't even want, Bang goes the money saved on "THIS WEEKS SPECIAL!"

I should have gone I7, I hope WE get some extra discount on our next order, come on OC show some GOODWILL.

You can always sell the 'new' chip you don't want? Won't loose that much money then :) Anyway, glad it's sorted out, I can imagine the frustration, having all the new gear sitting in front of you, switching it on and then the disappointment :p
