Guys,

Im a little confused, ive been looking at BMW 1 Series and it seems that all the engine capacity for the 116 118 and 120 are the same.

This includes the 116d 118d 120d and 123d.

Can someone tell me what the difference in engines/cars are and how easily a 116 is tunable to the level of 118 - is it software only or is there an actual physical difference in the engine?

Cheers

The diesel engines are all the same size - it is the same engine in various states of tune, with an additional turbocharger on the 123d.

Using the same, albeit detuned, diesel four-banger as the 118d and 120d, the new car will be pushed around with 116hp. The engine also produces 192 ft-lb of torque at 1,750 rpm, giving the three-door a 0-62mph time of 10.2 seconds. As a five-door the car reaches 62mph a tenth-of-a-second slower. Top speed for both is 125mph.

Taken from here.

And petrol?

Can the 116d be tuned to 118d or 120d?

Why would you want to - the 116d has literally only just been released so you are pretty much only going to get a brand new one. It's a matter of a few hundred quid cheaper than a 118d anyway so the only people who will buy it are company car drivers who wont tune the car anyway.

Get the 120d.

I'm sure that when a 'map' is released, you will be able to re-map a 116D to the level of a standard 118D..

However, I don't see anyone offering a remap for the 116d at the moment..

The 116 petrol gains a probably optimistic 10BHP from a remap, which is hardly worth it.]

IMO, you really want about 170+ BHP to make it feel remotely spritely, and a remapped 118D would just about get there..

My mate's missus just picked up her company 123d the other day, and that was pretty impressive..

The 98 316i was actually a 1.9, with an astounding 100bhp.

It's ludicrous TBH, accountants in the engine bay saying we need more models. BMW can't get 4 cylinders right.

Edit:
Interestingly the thread title is a valid IP address owned by the Sai gon Postel Corporation in Vietnam.
