Twitter is not for anything like that. It's a mircoblogging site, not a traditional social networking site.
Too many people miss the point of Twitter.

Twitter is just like reading someones Facebook "status updates" and nothing else.
It can be interesting reading what some influential person has posted... but for 99.999995% of the population in the world who have nothing worthwhile to share it is pointless.
Often find myself reading what Stephen Fry or Jonathan Ross are up to but TBH not many "celebs" lead as interesting lives as the media portrays.

It depends what the person writing it uses it for...
If it's to share useful links, or if it's essentially an rss feed, or for important updates about something? or just interesting updates. I've been keeping mine upto date with my process of looking at and making offers on houses, my friends/colleagues who follow me keep an eye on those even though they're of no interest to anyone else. It's a subscription based medium so your twitter experience is only as poor as the people you follow, choose interesting people and it's interesting, choose mundane people and it's not. That's by no means a flaw with the system and it doesn't even matter if "most of twitter's like that" because you dont follow most of twitter, you follow the people you choose to

You've definitely missed the point then.
Ahh, someone has an inkling of the purpose of Twitter.
My Twitter feed is half useful links half ramblings, all of which have significance to me.
