Does anyone know when I should call up to get the results of a blood test I had this morning?

I looked on the NHS site and it just said that when they came back the doctor would discuss it with me, but without giving a time frame.

I am not at home this week so I won't be able to get any messages (if they call me) until Sunday but I obviously want to find out if there is something wrong before then.

I doubt it, what you can do is ring up the doctor and ask them to send you a copy, and chat about it some other time. The last time I had blood tests done the doctor sent them to me automatically (although that was private).

Having said that unless you know what you are looking at you probably won't understand them anyway, thy are just a few giberish words and random numbers, interesting all the same.

It depends on the test and the lab it was sent to. Call the doctors office tomorrow and ask them. For what it's worth, tests at my GP never take less than a week.

If you dont mind me asking, what was the blood test for exactly ?, I can then give you exactly how long it takes on the instruments (I do it for a living), at minimum id say depending on what time you had it, tomorrow night at best, it also depends on how many other people they want to test....they dont just put 1 test through, its not cost effective, unless its an emergency.

I had a Full Blood Count and Glandular Fever test done on the NHS (GP sent me off to the Hospital for it).

I know that when my sister has all her tests done privatly (loads as she has Crohns), it takes 2 days, but obviously that is private.

Normally a week at the GUM.

Funny story about the GUM clinic.

Imagine yourself at 13 years old being given a talk about STD's and then shown a video. Imagine this in an all boys school where 2 classes had been put together for this presentation.

Half way through the video we get something along the lines of:

'If you think you have contracted an STD you can visit the GUM clinic at your local hospital in complete confidence most hours of the day'

At which point my mate jumps up and runs out of the classroom and then outside the school.

After that he was forever known as the boy with all of the STD's.

NHS anywhere between 3/4 days to 4 weeks, depending on how many other patients they have to put through (on test machines its more economical to run in batches of 25 people for example, than just one person)

Another vote fro giving them a call yourself. I know, I have been having blood tests every 2 months for erm...the last 5 years.

Doctor will ring u if theres anything worrying in your results. They are normally tested on the day depending what tests they put u in for, if its like a rheumatoid screen or an allergy test then it might be longer

fbc normally arrives in my lablinks the following day unless very derranged when I would be contacted by phone and I would then be contacting the patient most likely anyway. glandular fever screen can take a couple of days but normally less then 3-4 most of the time.

Think it took about a week to get my fasting blood results back.

No where near as bad as waiting for the results for a lumbar puncture, 3 weeks of worry and stress followed by relief then more stress and depression, but that'll be another thread.

Give it a few days then ring.
