Help choosing a car - Sub £1,000

You have all given me a lot to think about :D

Not too sure about the primera's or the MX5's but will keep them in mind :)

Time to start hunting and making phone calls :D

guessing from his username, he's male, so i adoubt that. :p

You should drive one, amazing fun for such a cheap car.

Thats if you're mature enough to drive something that might make people call you a hairdresser. :p

I wouldn't buy one for a grand though as it will be a bit shabby. Under 1k I'd probably look at some of the higher power rover models for a bit of bargain fun.

I wouldn't touch a 1k sport. I thought about getting a sport before, and basically, they are seriously underpowered and are mostly a look-a-like car.

Obviously nothing on the Turbo's but it still went!

This is my mates old scooby sport what he swapped for his broken chavved up citreon xsara and 500 quid (so he got it for about 1100 quid really), the scooby was in mint condition inside and out with no problems at all when it came to MOT, think it had 101k on it when he first got it

sounded amazing aswell!

only downside is that its loves its petrol like a fat kid loves cake!

I don't think a scooby is ideal for someone who only has a 1k budget. If you have the cash in reserve to keep up with the maintenance costs, if you want to spend 1k and forget about it, then i'd look elsewhere.

haha, i couldn't live with the shame :p

na, ive seen a odd few which are nice but for 1k you would have to get the really old ones what would chop anything in half if you was to knock someone over, horrible things them ones.

plus i couldn't see a 6.3 stocky built shaved head driving about in one, maybe someone off front of them men's hair dye box's! :p

I would consider a Gen6 Celica GT.

I think you could probably pick up a reasonable example for just over a grand.

Reasons;

  • Best looking car on your list
  • Cheap parts (plenty of breakers around)
  • Reliable
  • Fast enough, 0-60 in 7.9
  • Not so bad on the petrol
  • Reasonable insurance
  • Practical enough (Large boot space. Can fit 2 in the back if really necessary)
  • Plenty drivers space (you mentioned you were 6"3)
  • Good support (for any advice on anything to do with Celica's go to http://www.celica-club.co.uk. Friendly and helpful bunch over there)

Can you get an E30 325 for a grand? I'd prefer something RWD, but you are mostly limited to FWD for this kind of budget. I would be looking at a Rover 220/420/620 Turbo I think :)

See www.rovertech.net for more info and cars for sale :)

I went for an Alfa 155 in that sort of situation. Lovely sound, goes well, comfy and more space. Looks rather good too, I reckon. OK, maintaining it can take a bit (36k belts, ~50k wishbones, one or two other wear-and-tear bits), but its not insane money. The 145/146 are largely similar.

Is an old cheap fast car not going to cost quite a bit to run, thus why spend £1k on it when it's gonna cost £3k in repairs a year?

Personally if you've only got £1k to play with know your limits and get something cheap to run that's sensible and not gonna cause you many problems.

You spent 10k on a fiat. You have no say as you obviously have more money than sense.
