I'm a bit stuck as far as decent tyres go with this car thanks to the reasonably tiny size involved - 155/65/R13  Toyo 350s seem to be a decent price - anyone know if they're any good, or can recommend a tyre to look at?

Toyos should be fine, they never have a good rep in the wet tho and I can confirm this from the set of CF1's on my track tyres. Don't know if they do them in your size but Goodyear Hydragrips are what I use on both my cars for road tyres. They offer superb wet performance and are nearly as good as eagle f1's in the dry.

I used to use Vredestein Hi-Tracs when i had my cinq, so they should be available in your size, paid about £30 each for them.

I've seen Vredenstein T-Tracs for sale in the right size. They don't appear to be too expensive.

Definitely avoid CF1s - they're absolutely horrendous in the wet, particularly straight line braking. I locked up in my sister's car and almost ploughed into a sign post whilst sharp braking from 30mph to 10mph after a light shower, when the road was still a bit greasy (with water), whilst trying to do a sharp right turn.

Night and day difference between T1-Rs and CF1s.

The problem which you've got with that tyre size is that the law of diminishing returns applies. There's only so much grip a 155 tyre can provide.

what size rims are they, width wise?

i used to run 175/50's when i had 13" wheels, the rims where 5.5" and it was fine with 175 tyres.

continental sport contacts can be had in that size and are good imo

The non Proxes Toyos are apparently terrible, didn't the Roadpro's come bottom of a big test a few years back?

I've driven a Mk2 Escort on Roadpro's and they were alright in the dry, perhaps they only suit light cars? Never tried them in the wet or on anything modern though.

175/60/13 are very very similar in diameter (speedo will be out by 1mph at 60) to stock size and you can get Yoko A539's which were excellent on the Dolomite, really the best you can go without getting a trackday tyre. £43.36 on the link below, worth the money for them.

i've had A539's and they were truly awful in the wet / damp / typical british climate.
