i just bought myself a new 24" screen whith a full hd resolution (1900x1080) but got quite disepointed when i try to watch my low res movies on it! the picture is not as good at all as i had hoped for. is there anyway you can upscale low res movies to ful hd or at least 720 p ?
or will it help if i set down the reselution of the screen?
any softwere that will give my screen a less fussy picture?
right now the pixels lokes a bit like squares about the size of my keybords keys ! plz help me!
(all hd, both 720 and 1080 loks amazing btw !<3)

When i bought my 24" monitor i thought it was akin to watching a youtube video on a 50" plasma. Nothing you can do about it but you'll get used to it.

Grab yourself ffdshow and fart about with....

Postprocessing
Resize/Aspect
Sharpen
Blur/NR

Can make a nice difference, I posted some grabs in a thread a while back. Here.

You have the wrong approach mate.

Trying to upscale DivX is a waste of time. In affect what you are asking to do is make an mp3 in to HD audio. It just isn't possible as the original source (DivX/XviD, and mp3 as I have mentioned) is compressed which means it has dropped quality to enable a smaller file size. Once that quality has gone its gone.

To give you an example: a DivX file is usually around 700mb - 1.4Gb. a DVD is around 4.5Gb, a 720p HD is around 8.4Gb and a 1080p is around 10-12Gb.
Can you see how much data has been lost to get it down to DivX size.

And its generally accepted that SD looks better on a 720p screen and not so good on a 1080p screen

While you're correct about the reduction in size for each of the formats you're comparing apples and pears with regards to codecs. MPEG4 is much more efficient space wise than MPEG2 - hence a DivX encode can look pretty close to a DVD but in a much smaller amount of space.

I've had no problems upscaling DivX files to run at higher res to give a more pleasing picture before. Some of the interpolation algorithms are pretty impressive.

Admittedly I've not done it for a few years since I've not had an HTPC for a while but I used a program called ZoomPlayer and this guide: http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=ffdshowdvd_1 (which seems to be down at the mo)

Having said that I've been looking at starting using it again soon when I purchase my new TV and the above suggestion seems the most likely candidate - plus a quick ffdshow guide google produces some good results. Should be everything you need to get started

I have a 720p Tv/monitor and a 1920x1200 laptop, the SD files i have watched are pretty poor on both of them, 720p files look amazing on the tv but not so good on the laptop, you need 1080p files for it to look as good as 720p files on the Tv

so whats the point of buying a full hd screen then? if everything is going to look worse? would you recomend someone who only uses the screen for watching movies to buy a low ress screen?

What? I use a screen for movies and TV, Blu-Ray is hi-def why would I buy a low res screen just for movies?

@monkeyspank why do you assume they're pirated? People rip their own discs for ease of use.
