Evening all,

been a while since i was in here (well, a good few years to tell the truth since my camera got nicked and not replace!).

The girlfriend is after a camera from me for her birthday. Ideally she would like it as small as functionally possible, with a decent screen on the back so she can see what she is taking a picture of (to stop her from taking pictures where for example, she takes a picture of me and cuts half my legs off and has half a screen of sky in the background! :D), more of a point and shoot type of camera. Have had a quick look around and quite like the looks of the Canon Digital Ixus range, but was wondering where they stoodd in this line of cameras or if i should be looking at other manufacturers?

Personally i'd like a few more configurable options than the point/shoot, such as shutter speed, ISO settings etc, but i would presume you would get that on most digital cameras nowadays anyway.

thanks for any help you can offer,

Kef

Should say, budget wise, it's up to £250.

For that kind of money you have an incredible choice in compacts.
You could easily afford a waterproof/drop-proof with 'easy to use' facilities and a good degree of control if you want it.

Might be worth looking up some of the 'Mag' reviews:)

canon ixus 100IS without a doubt, incredibly sexy little camera, fantastic quality and does hi def video to boot.

VERY nice

Been looking at that, the IXUS 990 and the 980, would help if Canon made their model numbers in some way reflect the position in their range (not to mention when you look on american review sites and the model numbers are a right mess as they mix and match with the european versions!). I know she would like the IXUS range (powershot is a bit too clunky for her), just wondering if there were any other make/model i should be looking at (had a quick browse of the Panasonic Lumix LX-3 but i know she wouldn't like the look of it........ well, she is a bird!).

panasonic make fantastic advanced compacts for people who like a bit more control, and generally a bit larger bodies, but the ultra compacts are dominated by the ixus imo :)

The ixus 100 is the first camera i've got into my shop for a long time that has made me want to grab my credit card even though i really really dont need it!

for total pocket sized control i'd look for something in the canon powershot series, their a bit bigger than the ixus (is the plural ixi?) but they really do have all the fiddling options you could want. you can get some of the lightly older models pretty reasonably now.
*EDIT*
just noticed you said the powershots are too chunky for her above, i wouldnt personaly rule out some of what have nikon have to offer, i know the ixus are great but i think some of the nikon are abit cheaper
