Finally got my new car. Pics of an AWD Datsun with a straight 6 inside

Cheap 3 inch exhaust from GTST, 200 quid.
2nd hand GTT intercooler 30 quid
Decat downpipe and elbow 100 quid
Boost controller 150 quid

Will get you an extra 30 - 35bhp and it will be a ton more responsive :)

Not quite so simple I'm afraid.

I can fit 3 inch Skyline elbow and downpipe, however the stay is in a different place on the Ceffy, fortunately KTS Exhausts do a Ceffy-specific version.

The rest of the exhaust is nothing like either the skyline or the S13, so I'll be making a trip to Pro-speed in Cardiff for that.

150 quid seems a lot for a boost controller. I'll probably just do it the cheap way with a dawes device, at least to begin with. I also have a T28 off an S14 sat in the shed :)

No rush for this kind of thing, right now I'm just wondering what size tyres to get. What's the widest you can sensibly get on a 7.5"x16" wheel? It's currently running 205/60/15 so I'm thinking 225/45/16, but unsure if 225s will go on in a useful manner.

Sorry to say, I don't like it.
That kinda money buys a lovey E38 or E39 which are superior cars in every way. Even a Mk2 GS430 or GS300 can be had for that kinda money which would have been newer, faster (430), more comfortable, better equipped, more stylish etc etc.

Each to their own I suppose. Not the kinda thing I would drop 4 large on and I can't even see why anyone else would either.

It's not really a sleeper is it, it's a 200bhp automatic Jap car, its what, 0-60 in 8-9 seconds? It looks like a Nissan Maxima, never a sleeper really, which I guess isnt suprising as were it released over here as its successor was, it WOULD have been a Maxima.

I'm struggling to think what this has got for £4k that my e36 328i has not got for sub £1k

If the OP likes it, good for him, like others, I can't help thinking its a minicab!

O/T Gotta love wireless internet access @ Durham Services!!:D

Here's a better interior pic courtesy of the seller in Japan.

I like it, it's simple, well laid out and uncluttered. That E38 interior (assuming a GIS for E38 Interior got me valid results) just looks like a mess to me, and walnut trim, urgh!

The stupid aerial on the dash was removed not long after I got it. It's the receiver for a remote starter which doesn't seem to work and is completely illegal anyway. I figure cutting the aerial off is sufficient proof that I don't intend to use it, while I take the time to get rid of it properly.

And for those of you going on about £4K. Don't forget that I got stiffed on the exhange rates having agreed to buy the car, due to my insurance being slow to pay out. If that hadn't have happened I'd have paid under 3K.

This has been an interesting experience for me, next time I import a car, if there is a next time, I'll be doing the UK conversion myself rather than shelling out 400 quid for a company to do it (I paid an agent to arrange a package deal where they buy the car for me, ship it and hand it off to a company in Bristol to do the conversion). I'll also have a better idea of what the final cost was going to be. When I agreed to buy it I expected the total to come out more like £2.5K

lol at thinking e38 interior is a mess, and that "thing" above isn't.

It is a broad spectrum of cheap, nasty plastics and rubber, with all the style and flair of a sheet of plain, blank A4 paper.

Edit: ^^^^ I'd love a Stagea RS4, but they're still rather costly and the insurance is very high.

I found this and this when looking for E38 interiors.

Lets see

- two adjustable dials either side of the instrument cluster, wtf
- 13 functions moved onto the steering wheel, so you're guaranteed to have to look at it to figure out what button to press
- Hazard light button behind the gearstick. That's almost as bad as where Volvo put it on my 940
- non-standard size radio so I cannot install my car PC (this is enough to reject the car outright)
- 3 steering wheel stalks, some of which seem to have additional controls stuck onto them as well
- That HVAC controller looks overly complicated
- Plastic walnut trim straight out of a Rover 75
- Since it's german, it probably has that annoying feature where you can't switch the rear fogs on without having the front ones on first

Sure the BMW has prettier plastic (apart from the walnut effect plastic) but I rarely look at a car's interior, I operate it by feel while looking at the road.

The Ceffy has a nice simple button layout, standard layout stalks (none of this pull to switch the high beams on, and good old fashioned latching indicator) with the indicator/lighting stalk where it belongs, on the right hand side, also the airvents are positioned such that you can use them as hand warmers, something I really liked on my GF's S13.

The above is my old e38's interior, I can assure you the plastic wood is not plastic.

Clearly, you have not driven one nor spent any time in one.

If thats a mess to you compared to the taxi, then I'll have what your smoking, it seems good. ;):p:D

So, what you are saying is that you don't like twisty knobs to turn your lights on, you get confused with more than 5 buttons on the steering wheel, you buy cars where you need the hazard lights a lot, you can't work out how to fit a screen into something larger than double din (or work out where to buy fascias), you don't like decent climate control, and that you dislike wood (yes, it is REAL wood).

I'm with you all the way,i have a soft spot for nissans.TradeMe usually has a few Stagea 260RS(GTR) for sale, but not at the mo

Yes
you get confused with more than 5 buttons on the steering wheel
I can figure it out just fine, but I only have so much muscle memory available and that steering wheel is just excessive
you buy cars where you need the hazard lights a lot
If I'm in a situation where I need the hazards, I want the switch to be in an obvious place, or at least somewhere I can see it without looking around first. That's why most cars put it at the top of the centre console.
you can't work out how to fit a screen into something larger than double din (or work out where to buy fascias)
I can, but I can't be bothered, in any case that computer looked smaller than a double DIN. Oh yeah, my PC case is designed to work with the JDM style rackmount radio mountings, not the Euro style radio cage.
you don't like decent climate control
My climate control works just fine. Dual zone would be nice but I don't think that E38 has it either
and that you dislike wood (yes, it is REAL wood).
Yes, wood in an interior (real or otherwise) is for people who smoke pipes.

Each to his/her own, but, the more I read this, the more i think its got to be some kind of wind up - I'd hope so anyway!

Btw, All e38's have aircon, some had dual zone climate as a cost option.

Edit: ^^^^ Yup, it's the same variant of ATESSA as fitted to the GTS-4 and GT-R

I'll bring it to the RR, though I'm starting to get the feeling that after the way the thread has gone it'll end up getting keyed by the BMW crew.

Mine has aircon too. Don't think dual-zone was invented when this car came out though. It's not a big loss as 99% of the time I travel alone anyway.

Did any E38s have AWD?

The reason the E38 has so many buttons is that, like the E39, the SE wheel allows you to control things like the ventilation as well as the normal cruise/radio controls. You are free to ignore the buttons you don't wish to use, and I've never once had to look at the buttons on my wheel to know which ones to press beyond the first few familiarisation attempts.

Of course the E38 has dual zone climate control, and there is nothing wrong with twist dials to switch lights on (Although on the BMW you never use on of them as it is always left in the 'Auto Lights' position.

The car posted has 3 stalks for one simple reason - it has an electrically adjustable steering column and one of the stalks controls that. Otherwise it has two stalks, like any normal car. Most E38/39's do not have the third stalk.

The wood is not fake, but it also not compulsory. I have Aluminium trim.

There is nothing complex about the HVAC system - you set the temperature and forget it exists. I last touched my HVAC controls in 2008.

The hazard switch location is perfectly intuittive.

The E38 is built properly with high quality materials, no scratchy cheap nasty plastics, and has a quality feel to everything you touch. It is a better car than a 1993 Nissan Cefiro in every possible way.

You prefer the Cefiro, which is great, as you've now got one, but we just think you are wrong in a lot of your opinions :p

I'll bring it to the RR, though I'm starting to get the feeling that after the way the thread has gone it'll end up getting keyed by the BMW crew.

Why would anyone do that  This is the internet and we are arguing about cars. Nobody would key your car

Don't think the e38 ever had the option of being an xi model, no.

Yes, it did. Not that it's as much of an advantage as the AWD Jap stuff is, though, as the E38 is RWD which is fine. AWD is preferable on larger Jap stuff because if it wasn't AWD it would instead be FWD.
