What’s the minimum spec N-Vida card (PCI-express) which would give smooth video on a 23” wide screen panel I'm using DVI the resolution is 2048x1152, I currently run a Zotac GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3

Does the 8600GT not play back 1080p video smoothly? Thought it would be more than fine for playing video.

Odd resolution...

But anyway, something in the region of a GTX280 or a 1Gb 4870.

In terms of number of pixels, your screen is within 3% of a 1920*1200 screen (though it's obviously 16:9 rather than 16:10). I had a GTX280 which was great at 1920.

For non gaming an 8600GT should be fine even for 1080p playback...

I'm using a 2048x display myself.

For gaming the 260GTX does ok for most games but a few in ultra or very high settings with lots of FSAA don't quite cut it so you'd have to look at the 4870X2 or 295GTX or an SLI/CF setup.

Intel Core 2 DUO E6700
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-64006700
Asus Commando P965

I would be willing to put money on it not being the 8600GT or any of your hardware... More likely drivers, software or the actual video file.

Possibly try doing a safe mode driver clean. 100% make sure you are downloading the proper drivers for your card and try out different software for playing back the video.

I'm playing the video back using Nero ShowTime (Nero 9) but even playing back video off of my tube in full screen is the same, I'm currently in XP SP3 but later I will try XP64 SP2, when I was using my 19” panel running 1280x1024 it was no problem at all

a few yaers back when i had a 7600GT, that even played 1080p fine

download "media player classic" and use that, by far the best media application imo

I believe the e6700 at stock should handle 1080p content fine. So again something to do with drivers, random HDD access etc. And if using gpu acceleration via software which supports this, then the 8600gt should do it with ease.

Using powerdvd ultra which supports both UVD/UVD2 and Purevideo HD.

They are using a measly 1.8ghz C2D system.

Many thanks everyone I will download powerdvd ultra and try that and report back later.
Incidentally the hard drive is a Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB SATA II 7200rpm 32MB buffer and the monitor is a Samsung SM2343BW 23" not bad but the quality is not quite as good as my old Viewsonic VP930 19"

Did you get this resolved? I have a similar problem with the monitor, occasional juddering but more like when there are sharp or constant turns of camera on the screen, it seems to split into 3 equal bands from top to bottom and they "keep up" with the turning very slightly behind one another. It is mostly a video problem but it happens sometimes in more cut scenes in games too like the last remnant.

I'm running it on E5200 at 3.3 with 4gb and a 4870 1GB. I used to have an 8800GT and things haven't really improved since the swap.

I'm not the most clued up on this. Is it the ' 3D/All Settings/Wait for vertical refresh option on ATI Catalyst I need to be changing? It is currently set to off unless application specifies.
