4870 512mb to 1gb - worth it?

At 1680x1050 I dunno...I used a 512mb 4870 on 2048x1152 though and thought it handled it ok, then changed to 1gb 4870 and was surprised to see a substantial difference.

At 1680x1050 the story may be different though...

Try rivatuner for monitoring memory usage in a game, it can display program and video memory used, graph and log it for you

Some old game engines are inefficient but I think it would need some high res textures to reach that level of consumption.

not worth upgrading at all... and if you did decide to ''upgrade'' to a 48701GB...id get the GTX260 instead.

you seen the prices recently?

4870 1gb > GTX 260 imo

Stock vs stock maybe, clock the knackers off the 260 and I'd have the 260. The fact just about all of them will do atleast 700MHz core is a major buying factor whereas the 4870 only does 50MHz~ OC without insane fan speed/noise.

I made the change from the 512mb version when the 1gb were cheap the first time round. Quickly sold my old card and the upgrade cost me £25!

I saw a big different in games like fallout 3, things do seem a lot smoother generally too. I also think the trend will continue when the newer games come out, I think it all depends on how long you intend on keeping it for.

I saw a massive difference in vantage too, It ran totally smooth whereas it was VERY jumpy with the 512. Although strangely the score only saw a slight increase...

Although looking at the current prices of the 260gtx, i'd go for that in a heart beat :)

EDIT: I game at 1920 x 1200
