think i know the basics, both for moving stuff from PC to PC or another external device, if im right which would be a better option for me between my desktop and laptop and how would it work? would i just see the laptops HDD on the "Computer" screen on my desktop? thanks!

If you have a firewire port on both your laptop and desktop I believe you can transfer data between the two, pehaps with some software. Firewire has fairly high data rate (vs. a wireless network for example) which means would be good for transferring large amounts.

If your not doing huge amounts of data then I would just do whats mentioned above and make your laptop disk available on your network when you connect.

My next laptop will have esata built in as it is so much faster than the alternatives, so much so that I've put an esata expresscard in the current one.

If your laptop has it then use it, you will not be disppointed.
