Housemate done a runner

To the best of my knowledge, unless there is a specific statement otherwise, they'd all be equally liable anyway.

no they wouldn't. if you're not on the lease, you're not liable for anything

unfortunately you're going to have to foot the outstanding amount. report him for benefit fraud though. he sounds like a ****

Just an update, scanned his passport, driver's license and Birth Certificate ages ago. Thought I'd deleted it but didn't... Wonder how advantageous this is?
Well if you want a take a stab at some false identity fraud, you've got the right things! ;) :p

Seriously, the passport photo may come in handy if the bailiffs need to know what he looks like otherwise that lot isn't much use...

Right, so we're thinking about making a small claim, but we need the guy's postal address. Anyone has any suggestions on how we can actually track him down with the information we've got? Could the small claims department do the tracking?

Don't think you have much chance of tracking him down with what you've got. Sure, you have his NI number etc. but Data Protection legislation will stop any companies from giving you his current details.

Your best bet, as mentioned previously, is to leave him a voice mail threatening to dob him in over doing the double if he doesn't give you the money.

If he doesn't respond - dob him in. The respective agencies involved in that CAN use the details you have to track him down, and he'll suffer for it.

You'll still have to cough up his debts, however, but in the end he'll get his just desserts.

Reported him to the benefit frauds department. They even took the bank details, previous car license number (found his car insurance paperwork for the car he ditched 2 weeks ago), phone number. Said I'd be contacted by the investigator for the other details like passport and stuff.

Long as he gets some sort of justice I guess I'm satisfied. Still not nice to have to foot the rent he didn't pay, quite an expensive lesson to learn!

WHen you do find out his whereabouts, i'd still take him to small claims court for the rent and bills, just because he isn't on the agreement doesn't mean he should get off scott-free.

If you have his bank account and sort code, and he has stiffed you, you could just ring up the energy companies that are under his name and state you'd like to begin paying the bills by direct debit ;)

We're liable for his rent unfortunately, and since he owed 2 months already, it comes to over £500.

We'll be making calls tomorrow with the Job Seeker's Department with the information. Part of us just want to actually find him though :o

Unless your names are all on the same tenancy agreement or there is a clause on the agreement that clearly states you are all liable for each others rent, then you most definately arent liable at all.

Call the job centre and let them know, i believe there is a specific phone number for reporting possible fraud/benefit spongers. If your unsure about your liability for the rent, take a copy of your tenancy agreement to your local Citizens Advice and they will tell you exactly where you stand.
