Im currently running a q6600 at 3.8ghz, considering changing to a 45nm quad, in the hope of hiting 4ghz+, which one should i go for, 9550/9650, cooling is a lapped true black and 2x2000 rpm fans.

Other than lower temps, for the money i dont think you would notice enough of a difference. save for i7.

Well my current q6600 at 100% load in p95 hits 68-68-62-62, im primarily a gamer and so far i7 doesnt seem that impressive, my nephew has an i7 920 rig with a gtx 280 (same card as me) and theres no difference in games whatsoever, but when it comes to video encoding the i7 920 is very impressive, but so far it isnt really a gamer's choice chip.

Tbh the only reason im afer a new cpu is to find out how far i can overclock it, ive had my q6600 for about 7 months, and it's a reasonable clocking chip (3.8ghz on 1.512 vcore) 1.2750 vid chip, it has served me well, but i fancy something that's capable of going a bit further, and will run a bit cooler.

Is your Q6600 totally maxed at 3.8GHz or is there something else holding it back?

Apart from that I think the Power-Users are well taken care of with an overclocked Wolfdale . . . . if your a proper Quad-Core user then Intel® Core™i7 offers the maximum performance you may seek . .

IMHO a tweaked LGA775 Wolfdale is ludicrously fast for most in 2009

If its gotta be a Yorkie buy the best one you can with the higest multi, just seems a bit weird paying out the rough same price for a LGA775 Quad when you could have a firehouse known as the Core™i7! :p

Personally if you can give up the Quad thing I think you will find a Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 will give you the GHz thrill you are seeking . . peace!

P.S: this is my first forum post made in Windows 7 - Internet Explorer 8 Beta . . . lovely! :o

Hi big wayne, yep my q6600 is maxed on vcore that im comfortable with (1.50625 in bios. 1.496 windows idle. 1.512 at p95 load) it's been a great chip, runs very cool in my p5q deluxe with my near extreme air cooling (2xsharkoon silent eagle 2000's on a lapped TRUE black) The E8000 series dual's perked my interest a few months ago, but i do a lot of video encoding and then gaming. Ive seen a lot of your post's regarding power consumption and overclocking, and yes, the old 65nm q6600 is a very volt hungry cpu, hence id like to move to a more modern lga 775 quad, i think that i7 is still to early to adopt as a main system, id prefer to wait till it matures, like i did with a64 socket 939, my first ever pc, and it's still going strong:)

I would recommend either an i7, or a high end dual core. Since it's for gaming, a 5GHz dual core may actually be better than a 4-4.3GHz quad. In games, you will also see too little gain from a Q6600 to a Q9550, so I would hold on for i7 later on.

I'm with Big Wayne on this one. If you want a Quad Core, and you want it for more than JUST gaming = go i7. If you only want a new CPU for gaming = E8x00

How are you finding win7?, my nephew got me a copy of the 64bit version to try, small matter of getting rid of my raid0 array with 2 74gb raptors and transfer my os to my new samsung 320gb spinpoint and stick my western digital caviar in as a storage drive, the raptors were great but they didnt seem to get on with my oc on the p5q deluxe.:(

Unfortunatly mate i7 is out of my pice range at the mo, my idea of a new quad is based on encoding (which i do a fair bit of) and power consumption, my current q6600 is a greedy git as far as voltage goes, and i run my rig for a fair few hours a day, a quad would be very useful in my case, but the more efficient the better (and i game as well, need some escape:D)

Reasonable move, you will notice difference. q9550 It is a lot smoother and faster, yields Far lower temps than q6600 and clocks Higher

I went from a Q6600 @ 3.5ghz to a Q9450 @ 3.6ghz. Was completely an e-peen upgrade. Don't think the machine was any faster really.

i went from q6600 @ 3.6 to q9650 @ 3.6ghz currently at stock volts tbh did not notice any difference in games.

only thing i noticed that its produces less temperature then q6600 and needs less volts.

need to overclock more i guess to see some gains

Id mainly like to try a new 775 quad to see how far i could overclock one ive had my q6600 for a while now and it's a pretty ok clocking chip but i fancy something new

Current yorkies seem to be tricky to clock over 3.6/3.8ghz and tend to need a lot more vcore to get there which then cancels out the cooler running theory. The highest multi you can get is the best bet as mentioned earlier.

I wouldn't waste the money if I were you, unless you do a lot of video encoding using SSE4.........or if you're just bored and want to play with a new toy!! :p

Well me q9550 hangs around 55-57c with a xigamtek s1283 @ 3.4ghz at stock volts at full load and depending on your motherboard..i think 4ghz will be more possible than q6600.

really is no need

i went...

q6600@ 3.8
q9450@ 3.4
q9550@ 3.8
e8600@ 4.0

the q6600 and e8600 gave me the highest benchmarks

Yep the q6600 is certainly a robust cpu, ive had it clocked stable at 3.8ghz on air with a vcore of just over 1.5, currently running it at 3.6ghz on 1.4v for day to day usage.

I had a Q6600 @ 3.7GHz, and went to a Q9550 @4.0GHz, and the only real improvement was in video (Divx) encoding, so if you don't do a lot of video encoding, I would just save your money!
