The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

Had mine a few hours, I absolutely love it! The iPlayer app and Mobbler are frickin' awesome as well, must-have apps definitely.

I guess the only negative point is its size, it is slightly bulkier than my previous phone, SE W810i. But the size is soon forgotten with everything it gives you.
Snap! Finally entrusted my old w810i (great phone!) to the man drawer and moved on :p

On another note, does anyone use a protective cover for the screen or a plastic/crystal back? I've seen lots on the bay but don't know which to get!!

I bought one off the bay for 99p with free postage,

Just sticks over the screen and leaves a slight gap at the top right for the camera and light sensor.

anyone have one on vodafone? I am going to ring round o2 and vodafone (perhaps orange too) to try and get the best deal!

Has anyone debranded their phone to get updates?
Does it work with IMAP email?

I hope someone makes some software so you can touch scroll the menus!

Thanks

Good write up Fendi - did you have any issue's transfering media (movies or music) onto the phone?

// Edit - Been having a look at Mobiles.co.uk - they've got this phone at £15.00PM with O2. Anyone know if I went for this offer if I could transfer over my existing O2 number and credit from my PAYG phone please?

Any advice is appreciated here peeps - I dont venture into this section of the forums often as I admitedly dont know that much about mobiles :(

There were no problems transferring movies or images across to the phone. Used the usb cable it came with. My laptop has one of those dvd drives that doesn't accept mini discs so I had to download the Nokia suite for the phone. I think it was version 7.1. It also updated the phone through the cable.

Transfers were pretty quick. I loaded it with films of around 400mb in size and the picture quality was very good (not perfect though). I also downloaded some sofware to convert dvds to the format of the phone. I'm not sure if it reads .avi but will try a couple of files on it after work.

Mobiles.co.uk looked pretty good, I was considering them before ringing up Orange. Orange transferred my payg credit over and I was also able to transfer my number. I am pretty sure o2 would let you do the same if you are already with them. If not just give them your PAC code.

The phone is excellent. Though currently I can't get the internet to work. When I try to connect it says it can't connect and please try again later. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or if something needs to be enabled on Oranges side. I'll give them a ring later.

The W810i is a great phone. It has served me well, down the gym, on the bike, long walks etc. Superb. Built like a tank, it has survived a few drops too along the way. I might keep it as a back up, on the bay they still sell for £40 or so. More if you have a 4gig + card. I'll check out that Mobbler app :). Haven't used iPlayer yet :(.

I saw many there and wasn't sure which to go for. I read feedback from various sellers and some people complained that after taking off the screen protector it left a glue type substance that couldn't be removed. A silicon case sounds good though, my phone will need its protection if it is to last as long as the W810i. I'll keep on looking :).

How did you get this?

I spoke to a nice chap and told him what I was after. I think being polite helped a lot. He rang back later the same night with that offer, I did tell him I would have to think about it as I was waiting to hear back from another provider. He gave me an ultimatum and said it would expire if I didn't accept it so I did.

Has anyone had a problem with Orange World?

I rang Orange and they sent me an SMS where I had to enter a pin and save the update/ and then restart the phone after a minute or so. After doing this I still cannot get on the internet, the guy assured me I have Internet on my account.

Any suggestions on what I can try to fix this? I'll give them another ring after work but does anyone know if there is anything in the settings stopping me connecting?

At work there are secured WLAN's that the phone sees and tries to connect to, though I don't have the password for some of them. I can get Fring working find via a WLAN. It cannot connect through the internet though.

What I have been doing so far is /Main Menu screen/Internet/Web. It says "connecting via Orange WAP". It then goes through to the Orange World home page. If I try any website such as google it goes to a Orange World page saying " Sorry, It has not been possible to connect to Orange World. Please try again later."

Any idea what to do?

EDIT,

Got off the phone with Orange earlier, a technician said they were working on the GPRS and took a post down to add a booster. It should be up later. I'll check again tomorrow to see if it is working.. Fingers crossed.

Gonna be getting this in the next few days I think :)

Just gonna have to be careful with it, I don't think it'll stand up to the abuse I give my W810i. That phone really, really is built like a tank.

Does this phone transfer files quickly to your PC? My N82 and N73 (although claiming to be USB2 I think) were painfully slow!

Got my net problem solved after a few days of trying to solve the problem with them.

I suggested in the end for them to remove the data package from my contract and add it again. That solved the problem :)
