Has PC Gaming Died over the past year or so?

Well for me the allure just isnt there anyfore for PC gaming, the only PC game I play currently is Call of Duty whereas on the PS3 I play SF4, Killzone, Guitar Hero etc

There is a huge lack of PC only games at the moment which is an issue. For me the consoles are ahead

That's hardly helping most developers though is it?

I personally use the WoW argument against people who say "Pc Gaming is dead".

In my opinion mmo's are actually adversely affecting the PC Gaming industry. Take a look at the amount of projects devs and publishers have set up, only to cancel a few years later after ploughing a lot of money in to them. Where are they getting this money from? Oh, overpriced sales of games. When they see that people buy at this price, they then rise other prices accordingly.

XBox and PS3 will get more games for it, not because it's less piracy, but mainly because it's easier to develop on and it's easier to charge horrendous prices for a new game.

No its not. The PC is the easiest format to learn to work on, and produce games on mainly due to the amount of software available to the user. Therefore they can choose how they want to make their games.

Consoles are only easy to develop for if you get along with the pre-existing kit, which in some cases is extremely hard.

Also the PC game sales do not take account of digital downloads (i.e. Steam) so again you can not compare it justifiably.

This

PC gaming has died every year since time began.

And was resurrected around the late 80's?

PC games are far a few between, they ve made it harder to create maps or modsby players , there isnt any innovation like there was 10 years ago.
ps3 etc games are really boring infact i havent played my ps3 for a long time waste of money me thinks.
i've played bf series cod series etc.. and i just keep going back to tribes2, like warhammer on the ps3 4 maps only on the game wtf is that, if you want more maps you need to pay for it.

Ah this thread again, really should be locked right away, just an excuse for people to take a load of nonsense and claim it as the truth. Is PC gaming as strong as it used to be, no, is it dead or dying, not even close, more and more console developers are publishing their games on the PC when they didn't before.

All the emerging markets in the world are PC dominated (Russia, Eastern Europe etc) and people. Not to mention you make far more money from each copy of a PC game sold than you do with a console game.

Then again PC gaming must be dying when Crytek is running around buying studio after studio, WoW is the one of the most profitable games ever made and the guy who made Audiosurf is now a millionaire.

http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/games-of-2009/ if you can't find anything on that list to get excited about, then maybe it's not PC gaming that is dying, but your interest in PC gaming.

ModDB says you're wrong.

maps/mods iam talking about are server side not client side.
and btw all the games out now are copies of tribes series ( tribesnext now), and still not in par with that game, personally i think its the most perfect game any gamer will everplay.

so lets take the xbox360 for example. so far in 2009 it got:
Street fighter 4! (which is coming on pc sooner or later)
.
.
.
hmm anything else? nope, thats it.

games to look for on xbox360 in 2009: Halo 3 ODST. anything else? nope, nothing announced.

You are incredibly ignorant. At least do some research before coming out with such wild statements.

Games released in 09 so far for 360:

Resident Evil 5
Street Fighter 4
Skate 2
Halo Wars
Fear 2
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
GTA4 - The Lost and Damned (not a full game but a substantial add on)
Tom Clancy's HAWX

That's just a few games that have scored over 70% on Gamerankings.

As for games to look out for:

The Wheelman
Bionic Commando
White Gold: War in Paradise
Ninja Blade
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
FUEL
Prototype
Velvet Assassin
The Godfather 2
Blood Bowl
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
Battlefield 1943
Overlord II
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
Colin McRae: DIRT 2
Halo 3: ODST
Brutal Legend
Need for Speed: Shift
The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf
BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams
Dragon Age: Origins
Alan Wake
All Points Bulletin
Fight Night Round 4
Just Cause 2

And that's just a few I picked out. A few of the ones at the bottom of the list (especially APB and Alan Wake) may slip to 2010 but we'll have to see.

See plenty of them in games such as Cod4. Though if anything, server side mods are not encouraged due to their ability to adversely affect online play.

So basically you're putting a game on a pedestal, and refusing to play another game until you find one better. Great idea.

nice try but next time use exclusives like i did. we are comparing systems so no point showing me games that i can play on my pc with better framerates and graphics.

if i am ignorant then you are an idiot.

I differ on this opnion significantly having sold Killzone 2 within 6 days of receiving it. I felt the game was awful when compared to the COD series on the PC. The controls are sluggish with their being very little reward for careful play. The only thing which i liked was the lack of aim assist ut with a pad this makes things extremely tough

The controls aren't 'sluggish', they just have a bit of weight to them, you actually feel like you are controlling a person rather than a disembodied camera. It takes all of 5 minutes to get used to.

COD on the other hand feels floaty and unrealistic, you feel like you are moving a floating camera around a game world, with a gun attached.

Controls aside, the whole game just plays better than any COD game to date IMO, it has some of the best AI I've yet seen in a game (so much better than the droves of re-spawning clones in the COD games), and incredible visuals considering the hardware it is running on. Infact, I've yet to see a game with better environmental effects, and that's including anything on the PC.

But this has been done to death in the consoles section so let's not get into it again :)

I realise i'm in the minority about Killzone 2. I do agree the AI is very good but i dont play single player games anymore with one exception E:TW

Pretty solid definition of what an FPS game is, bizarre that it's being used as an argument against one.

You appear to have completely missed my point. Put it like this, what good would a racing game be that is totally devoid of any feeling?

Yes, you could argue that any 3d game is basically a camera floating around in a game world, my point was that Killzone actually feels like you are 'connected' to the game world, and COD feels floaty and disconnected in comparison.

i prefer the FPS view :D can't stand the 3rd person view e.g. DEAD SPACE
but i dont mind it in games like GTA :) wouldn't like to go first person in that

You didn't mention exclusives anywhere in your post. You said games currently out and due to be released. If you can't communicate your point effectively then expect to be called up on it.

Whilst not always PC exclusives (not that I care) over the past 12 months I've played plenty of enjoyable games:

L4D
Mirrors Edge
Lego Batman
Mass Effect
The Witcher: Enhanced Addition
Kings Bounty: The Legend
Drakensang
Fallout 3
Devil May Cry 4
Flatout: Ultimate Carnage
On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness episodes 1 & 2

But then I don't game 24+ hours a week, so it's not like I run out of stuff to play all the time.

If that includes crysis on very high, then i am impressed what the ps3 can do.

While the poly count is probably a mere fraction of that of crysis and the maps are minuscule in comparison they did really get the environmental effects spot on. But then, environmental effects are as much to do with artistic direction as it is graphical prowess. Take for example a desert shanty town with a strong cross-wind which picks up random wisps of sand, in which all cloth blows like it would in real life (seriously, they got the animations perfect!), you reach a certain point where a sniper runs across a bridge just in front of you and his cowl/cloak actually reacts to the wind perfectly too. It is stunning to look at.

Add to that the perfect usage of motion blur, fantastic lighting effects and particle effects and you get, as drexel said, some of the best environmental effects you'll ever see.

As i say, in terms of technical prowess crysis blows it away, but artistically killzone 2 is up there with the best, combine that with pretty damn impressive graphics and you get a beautiful game.
