Ideas for compact Mid Range Gaming Rig?

Just looking for ideas? Currently using a 2yr old Dell 9400 17" laptop 2Ghz Core2Duo with 7900GS 2GB and XP. Things like COD4 are fine in medium detail but WOW was a slide show as was ArmA. I'm short of space so hence why I went to just the laptop. A new gaming laptop would be too expensive. But I'm wondering is there a compact desktop that I could get better bang for buck, while still being able to store it away when not using it? I was considering buying another middle of the road laptop, but mid range gfx cards at the moment seem to be actually worse than the I have 7900GS.

Something's up there. I was playing WoW (when I did, for about 2 weeks) on a 7 year old desktop and it ran fine (Geforce 6800).

In didnt think WOW required a decently computer at all, the Graphics are not that good anyway, there all cartoony!

Also WOW runs fine on my brothers netbook which only has 1GB RAM 1.6Ghz proccessor and only 128MB of integrated graphics.

I thought "Mid Range" and less than a new gaming laptop and better than I currently have would narrow it down. I've no idea of prices of hardware, last PC I built was an overclocked P4 1.6 northwood. Remember them?

I assume self build with some overclocking would be the best bang for buck. I guess like a SFF shuttle.

self build is definately cheaper, and its always worth overclocking. I'll have a look at some specs

ok, so heres what I thought fora starting point.

I've assumed a budget of around £600 as a decent gaming laptop would be a grand or so.

but ^this^ spec will put you're old system to shame and cope with all the latest games fine.

one thing I haven't included is an operating system as I dont know if you intend to buy a new one or clone the drive from your laptop.
