Thinking of upgrading my FS9 rig from my E2180 currently at 2.9ghz to an E8400 as I'm getting fed up of 10-13fps in busy areas - anyone have any ideas of experience as to how much better my FS9 will be with a clocked E8400? Looking at an E0 stepping by the way :)

If it were FSX, it would be a little bit more substantial. For FS9 however, i bet you'd see zero change. Unfortunately, FS9 being five years old doesn't really help!

Keep your current chip and save your cash. (and get FSX with it!) :)

I have hundreds of pounds worth of add-ons - very little of which are FSX compatible.

I was under the impression that FS9 too is reliant on pure clock speed grunt. I saw a definite increase in performance from an A64 3700+ to the E2180 so I don't see how going to an E8400 will yield no further increase?

I got an E8400 from ocers when they cost £80 or so :p last october before the "omg recession!!!".

Its a noticable fps increase on an E8400@4ghz in things like crysis compared with an [email protected]. Your unlikely to get an E8400 that won't do at least 3.8/9 area tbh.

I'd go for it tbh :D

Think I'm gonna go for it.

Got a few hard drives and my E2180 to sell before to raise a bit of cash towards it - currently looking at one for just over 120 quid which seems to be the lowest I can find anywhere, even importing one from the states which is unusual.

you will see a world of difference...do it! i used to run an e6600 at 3ghz and noticed a seriously huge change in fps when i upped it to 3.6. once i moved to my [email protected] i have yet to see and fps lower than 25 even sitting at mega airport frankfurt with 100% ultimate traffic, active sky advanced, ge pro, ultimate terrain.......ect, ect.

crazy it's taken until now for the hardware to finally run fs9 perfectly.

Sold right there and then ^^^^ :)

Really? I had an E2180 then and used to check the wolfdale prices quite often. I don't remember them being anywhere near that price. I think the cheapest I saw the E8400 was about £126

Have an E3110 currently making it's way to me :D

Will report what I get out of it when it arrives :)

Its a delicate balance between CPU and GPU in FS games and in FS9 its almost certainly CPU limited!

Get a Penryn 45nm and clock the nads off it. You shouldn't be seeing 10-13FPS but then I guess your add-ons make a huge diff. 2.9 --> 4Ghz + the small % of improvement between the cores should see you 20 or more if your graphics card is up to it.

Nvidia cards have always been the better cards in FS games it seems, according to a sites comparison charts anyway!

A 8800GT beats a 4870 512Mb which I see as a little strange but there you go.

That's handy seeing as I've got an 8800GT sitting in my machine :-)

And with this E3110 hooked up too I should be seeing some good results :D

I only paid £95 for my original E8500 when they first came out. My E0 stepping one cost me £140 a couple of months or so ago.

OP, to give you a rough idea of if it would be worth it or not have a look at my thread here comparing E2000/E4000/E5000/E6000/E8000 series cpu's over a wide range of clockspeeds. Well, it will in about 10 minutes time anyway.

Well my E3110 dropped through the letterbox this morning. Talking of price, I paid bang on £100 for it, brand new without HSF, just the chip. Stuck it in my p5ne-sli under a Tuniq Tower and got nothing but a blank screen at POST. Forgot to do the battery out clear CMOS trick and then it booted fine.

Idling at 29 degrees 1.22vcore.

Won't have chance to have a play with it until sunday but if anyone's interested I'll post up how I'm getting along with it :)

Oh my life.

Just fired up FS9, heavy Active Sky overcast at Aerosoft's EDDF, PMDG 747 virtual cockpit and 100% custom AI.

FPS didn't budge below 30fps once and it feels smooth as silk. And that's running at 2560x1024.

E3110 @ 4ghz btw.

Andy is happy bunny :D :D :D :D :D
