I have a few processes running at the moment and the NB is at 77c but even when I don't my NB hits around 70c which I read is quite hot so I want to cool it to a decent temperature. All the case fans are on high and the cables are tidy. Anyone have any tips? Specs below

Asus Maximus Formula x38
Antec 1200
Q6600 ~ 3.5
GTX280

Maybe take it off and get some MX-2 under there, its shocking sometimes to see what motherboard manufacturers put under there as stock! Other than that a trusty 40mm fan on 7v would do the trick, combine these and it wont get over 50c.

Are you overclocking? What volts are going through it? At 70 odd degrees I am surprised your pc isn't crashing a lot. Most sites say to try and keep the NB temp under 50ish °C for reliable clocks. Sounds like you have very poor contact between the cooler and the heat spreader, or zero air flow over the cooler as Xplo says.

the Maximus Formula doesnt have the best application of stock TIM to say the least. Be gentle taking off the heatsink arrangement and as you've been running it you will find it stuck fast, hairdryer aimed at it will help greatly in loosening it to get it off and put some decent paste on

It was a nightmare to get off my P5E before i had used it. Had to use a hairdryer even then. As you have used yours the epoxy stuff Asus uses will really have set. Be very careful with the hairdryer as it would be so easy to damage the board. The stock cooler is'nt very good anyway. It's only copper coloured aluminium. What about changing it to a 3rd party cooler? The NB/SB and top part of the heatsink over the mosfets are in one piece. You can leave the stock cooler on the mosfets. It was fine for me. Something like the Thermalright HR-05 (around £12-14 new or £7-10 off the bay) on the NB and a Zalman ZM-NB47J (£2.99) on the SB would do the job nicely.
