Anyone here used EBC Red Stuffs?

Hi all,

Right, not long ago I upgraded my brakes from standard disc and pads to EBC Ultimax discs and green stuff pads on the front, and some EBC pro discs on the back along with green stuffs again.

Now the car stops very well, and they were great till I went on track for 20 minutes and killed the 'edge' they had.

I'm on track again next week, so I'm going to get new pads all round, I'm tempted to try Red Stuffs, they are meant to have better stopping power once warmed up.

Have many here used them? Think it's worth the extra? or not especially?

I'm then at Donny for a whole day at the beginning of April so I'd like them to last till then as well :p :D

Cheers all,
Jake

I had them on my clio, briefly. I didn't much rate them at all, big lack of bite when cold, take a while to warm up and even then I didn't find they lasted much longer than the standard oem ferodos. Then to top it off I had to change them after only 6000 miles use, when the standard pads lasted for 20k+. One of the few things I liked about them was a lack of brake dust, but I'd have rather had some decent pads!

Although they're meant to be more extreme, I've read reports of yellowstuff pads being very good from cold and a lot more rounded pad than the reds.

Mine are great when warm but quite bad when cold and really bad in the wet.

When i had green stuffs fitted on the MX-5 i cooked them on the first lap around the ring', next day i did 4 laps in a row without issue, they seemed to need a good beating once to get them sorted out.

Never had red stuffs on a track but on the road i'm not the biggest fan atm.

i used yellow stuff for track use and green stuff for the road, be careful and give them a good stamp from a decent speed as you start driving that way they wont let you down when you break and get nothing but sponge

I'm currently in need of new pads so I've been looking into this as well.

General consensus on other forums seems to be that redstuff pads are rubbish. They need to be warmed up before they are any good on the road. The only thing people seem to rave about is the lack of brake dust.

From what I've read, I agree with spaz, the few user experiences I've found have all said that Yellowstuff pads have a better bite from cold and are also very good on the track. The downside being lots of dust.

I'm going to get some Yellows for my MX5 when the shop I use get them back in stock. If they're terrible when cold I'll probably end up getting another set for road use and switching them for trackdays - not an ideal situation but it seems hard to find a pad that's a good compromise!

From what I heard redstuff pads weren't very good, needing a good amount of heat before working well on the road.

For road use I've gone back to using original brembo pads and have some yellows bedded and ready to be switched over for trackdays. The yellows were ok on the road but you really notice a difference when heated up.

Previously I was using ferrodo ds2500's but the last 2 trackdays i've been getting deposits from the pads sticking to the disks in patches causing vibration while braking. The surface of the pads felt like sandpaper.

red stuffs for the track tbh. Green stuffs are far more suited for road use

No mate, reds or greens are road pads and which you use depends on how much power you have and how heavy your car is. Yellows are for track as they need more warming up before use and have a much higher heat range.

@ the OP. Spend the money and fit Pagids. Pricey, but christ they're good.

Yellows whilst track pads are supposed to have better cold performance than reds, think there's even a little chart somewhere that tells you the pros and cons of each.

I'd personally go for yellows over reds for track from what I've heard from people who've used both.

Greens are fine for lighter road cars but track work will kill them.

Or as said just get some pagid blues, will cost more but will work better and last ages.

I cannot believe how long Pagids last. They're not "disc-killers" either, which surprised me greatly.

Cheers for the input people :)

I'll use green stuffs for next week (only 20 min session) and then put yellows on for the Donny day :)

Hmm, I wish I could think of an alternative for you to try ;)
If you want my honest advice, try the Pagids and IMHO you'll sell the EBC's for scrap.

Tbh I've done about 11k on these pads and discs and if it wasn't for the track time I'd be keeping them as the car stops very well. :)

I currently have some grooved discs (non-poncy brand) and EBC yellows on the front of my EP3. They are very good once you're used to the initial insane 'bite' and they take a real beating, far more than you could ever hope to inflict them when on the road. They seem to be lasting well and aren't eating the discs badly either (I'm quite heavy on the brakes aswell).

I had them fitted about 8K ago too. I have also tried redstuff, but found the yellows better for spirited blasts down back roads.

Never got on with EBC pads on cars or bikes. In order of preference (and depending on the vehicle) I usually go for Mintex, Pagid or Ferodo. I've also used OMP pads and liked them too, although initial "bite" is probably a little soft for some people.

I've used both green and reds on the road. The greens were in my E30 325i and worked fine in that, never had an issue. Just felt like a better version of a standard set of pads. The reds were in my S13 200SX. As mentioned, from cold, really not great. Needed a good touch or two to wake them up. Having said that, once warmed, they were awesome, and despite being a bit of a hooligan at times (never on the road of course...), I never overheated them and they had tons of bite. For a track car, I'd use reds.

I'll second that, have tried a set of Reds and a set of Greens and binned them both after a few thousand miles. Mintex 1144s are my current choice, absolutely stunning when warmed up.

Oh cool - was wondering if you had used Yellows. I'm going to be getting some EBC discs and Yellowstuff pads for the next track day.

HT lead fixed the engine btw :D
